This is a write up about SHTF preparation, that is both sensible and educational, and its written by someone that has experienced first hand, what I think could very well happen to us in the United States.

This is not some movie scenario of extremes. This happened less than 20 years ago in one of the most developed and modernized countries in South America.

I think its important to note some of his tips like adding rat and cockroach poison to your prep stash, or understanding that you could very well end up in situation where while the cops can no longer protect you, they are not really on board with letting you protect yourself either (Katrina, anyone?)

Anyway, I think its an important read. Please do so with an open mind, and don't get hung up on some of his personal opinions or choices.

It deserves your attention. But...

Some of the things I took away from it, include the realizations that, even after SHTF, you might still have to go to work. Its not just about boarding yourself up in your compound. He went to work, he hid his gun on his person, and he didn't stop at red lights because bandits would try to rob you. Cops would give people tickets at first, but then gave up eventually.

He makes another really important point, that he and his wife made a decision that NO ONE. Absolutely NO ONE was allowed inside their house. Not a repair man, not a neighbor, not a school teacher, not a fricking Priest. NO ONE.
In fact, he almost got into a pretty nasty fight with one of his sister's boyfriends. He says, you will most likely be betrayed by someone you think is just a normal nice person. Happens all the time.

Disease. Viruses, colds, flu, etc. Insects, rodents, pests of other kinds. Polluted water, etc. These are things that you might be faced with.

Buying shite you think you would never need, like lipstick and candy, and liquor, that you can use to bribe the receptionist at the power company, or a cop, or anyone you need to do something for you.
Etc. etc.

If you are concerned with the possibility of what can happen when society stumbles or collapses, you should read this first hand account of exactly that.

He's got a section on driving. Here's a snippet...

quote:

Close your eyes. Look inside you. Find that little politically correct driver guy inside you, the one that was born the day you learned how to drive. You see him? Good! Grab him before he sneaks away. Now hit him, choke him, and kill that little PC driver guy inside you. I killed mine a couple of years ago. It took me about 2 years to drive the way I do now, to react without thinking. What does it mean? I no longer flinch, or stir the wheel when something comes close to the car; I keep driving as if nothing happens. A dog runs in front of the car and I don’t move an inch, a ball hits the windshield and nothing. I killed the little PC guy inside me, the one that used to say” Watch out! You are going to hit something/someone! Turn the other way!”. Reacting like that can get you killed after TSHTF.

Guys, you have to prepare for people throwing objects at your car, standing themselves in front of the vehicle so that you stop or crash against a light/tree/whatever, so that they can rob you. It takes time and determination, but you MUST get to a point where if the windshield blows in you can continue driving as best as you can, if someone puts twisted nails on the road and blows your tires, you keep calm and keep driving, always keep driving no matter what, until you get to a gas station or other place safe. Especially at night, or early morning you have to keep the car moving all the time. Of course this is not always possible. Sometimes there is too much traffic and you have to stop. In this case, slow down before you get to the cars, and keep the car moving slowly until the light changes, in order to always keep the car moving. Never cut away your own escape routes by getting too close to the car in front. Leave at least 5 meters or so in front of you, so that you have enough place to maneuver.

quote:

This should not be ignored guys, if SHTF the sheep will turn aggressive and might be dangerous. They will usually start a fight over a minor problem, just because they are nervous, or angry at the world. You can still get beat to death with a bat or bare hands you know? You car weaponry should take all of this into consideration. A handgun should be with you at all times, but it may be excessive for dealing with a mad driver. A bat and pepper spray will be enough to face an unarmed attacker, most times. I keep one canister of pepper spray and a small bat in my car at all times, apart form the 9mm pistol I may be carrying.

The pepper spray car tactic is the following:

Idiot driver starts a fight over XYZ.
Mad driver chases you, honking the horn, flashing lights and insulting.
I slow down, and let him place the car next to mine
9 out of 10 times, the mad driver will lower the passenger window to insult you the better.
That’s when you grab the can of pepper spray, lower your own window as if for insulting and you spray him into his own car by surprise.

Tons of info in that blog/article. Civil unrest in the US will be a nightmare, especially urban areas.

He certainly likes the semi-auto pistol and the 308. Does not like the AR. Good advice throughout. 500 round minimum per gun.

This could be influenced by the country he lives in, his experience with getting parts, etc. etc. I wouldn't read too too much into his weapon specifics like caliber and such.

For years, I had heard how much better Argentina was than the most of the rest of South America, both in education, industry, etc.

And then a few years back, I started hearing little tidbits about how bad it was. I would always think, "Oh man, they have that wrong. I always heard blah blah blah." But the fact is, I had no clue how much crap went down there in the last 20 years.

Now a simple Google search on "Argentina SHTF" yields tons of info.

This particular article that I linked, has me thinking about some things that I guess I often neglected to do. I mean, we always seem to think that a SHTF scenario in the US will be a Katrina, or a total and complete collapse of everything all at once. But what if its more like what happened in Argentina?

What if instead of a complete failure, your money only loses 25%(arbitrary number)of its purchasing power? You might be able to still make ends meet, and keep going to work and try to wade through it to better times. But what about the people under you on the economic ladder? What if those working stiffs are now so desperate they become criminals to make ends meet? Now you've got a problem. And don't get me started on the folks that are already criminals.

What if the cops don't go away? But they become a problem themselves? They aren't paid very well. They have guns, badges, and the authority of the court. Do they become more easily corrupted? More dangerous?

And the thing about the lipstick he puts in there. Money still worked for him. And food was valuable, but he doesn't want to bribe/barter with necessities. That's a non-starter. But a $3 tube of lipstick that used to be imported, and now would go for $30... that might grease the skids with some receptionist somewhere.

And the rats and cockroaches? How many preppers are prepared for a loss of sanitation?
There's a side to this SHTF preparation that I think gets overlooked. What happens if you prepare for the worst case... and the less than worse case is something you aren't prepared for and don't understand how to live in?

Interesting.

It's def an interesting twist in what your saying. Like you, I always assumed it would be all or nothing. Sounds like they basically went from a first world country to a third world country. Makes you think.
