Has the sheephead spawn started on all of the near shore rigs yet?
I know it's usually around this time of year.
Just wondering if any of y'all have tried to go for a meat-haul yet.
Apologies to all of you who are above catching sheephead

Yeah i've never really understood all the hate towards them in Louisiana.
I just look forward to this time of year because if you time it right, you can go and absolutely murder them on the near shore rigs.

I forget the name, but the reciprocating fillet saw works wonders on sheephead.
And as for sailcats, i've eaten them before and they're okay... but the only way i'm keeping them is if absolutely nothing else is biting.

Yes you can catch them there now.
I've not been yet. I usually load up on them in November but didn't get to it this year.
Once you learn to clean them it's easy and they taste great.
I recommend a serrated Dexter

I'm not the authority on sheephead, but I fished in some area like you described today sight fishing for redfish and saw hundreds of sheephead. All in very shallow water.
They didn't want the gulp alive shrimp, but my arrow did find one after we limited out on reds.
I think sheephead are Damn good eating. Serrated dexter Russell. Takes a big one to get a good slab, but the meat is as white as anything.

Just cut away from the ribs. Easy as pie.

I cut tail first like a triggerfish
take a wide berth around the shoulders and ribs and you get a good clean filet
a baked whole scaled sheepshead is also very good eating

they are good if you completely cut all the red off and they need to be at least around 18"-24" to be worth cleaning since you are only going to get meat off of the back half so a 18" fish will give you around a 8"-10" fillet and a 24" fish will give you around a 12"-13" fillet.
pretty good eating and tastes just like your regular average catfish
I use them for making Courtbouillon
as for sheepshead, they are great eating but I don't keep them unless they are big, just too wastefull to kill a fish for such a small amount of meat you get from them. for me it takes something over 18" to even think about keeping it

I know. And I thought long and hard about spelling it correctly.
Still couldn't bring myself to do so.
...almost like saying "crayfish" instead of "crawfish" for me.

No worries, I've made the same mistake many of times.
Damn fine eating fish. I call them bay snapper. Start cutting them halfway back from the head and they are easy to clean.
