The guys thread on setting a .243 up for his boy got me thinking about my oldest girl's first deer. I don't think I've ever seen a thread on here talking about our experiences with our kid's first deer or ducks or any other critter. Figured we could share some of those experiences bc let's face it there's no more exciting of a hunt than seeing them kill their first. I don't recall ever seeing a thread on here about this and we all know how much we love seeing kids killin critters

My oldest daughter is 12 now and has been hunting since 7. She's killed 2 deer now and the first is a memory I'll never forget. We were sitting in a ground blind when she shot a big doe @ 175yds. The look on that kid's face when she turned to look at me when that doe dropped was priceless. She was laughing and crying at the same time. She even got a big hug from me and the dust may have got in my eyes too there for a minute or two

Her first duck was the standard water swatted woodie drake. She was tickled to death and I was too. Her favorite part of it was getting to send our chessie herself to get it. Fast forward a little bit and she killed her first greenheads last year. She'd decided on her own that she was ready to move up to a 12ga so I took her to let her pick out whatever 12 felt best to her and figured I'd use it for a backup mud gun. She picked a new 3-1/2" A5 and ran some skeet loads through it. First two times she pulled the trigger on 3" duck loads through it she killed her first 2 greenheads as they were decoying. lot of high fives passed around to her from everyone in the blind that morning. Folks who don't have the opportunity to hunt with kids and see them fall in love with what we do are really missing out
Now I look forward to getting my middle daughter out there and my lil boy who just turned 3

My son is almost 3, I watched him swat a mosquito the other day. Not quite the same but I was proud.

I don't hunt but I do fish year round. The first bream she pulled in at about 1.5-2 years old on the deck in her princess nightgown and Frozen pole in hand is something I'll never forget. There have been many fish caught in the past couple years by her but that one was unbeatable

My daughter hunted with me from an early age. At around 8 or 9 she killed her first deer. We had been watching several deer all year but she wasn't ready to shoot yet. I finally talked her into it one afternoon. There were two young deer feeding about 20 yards from the box we were in. She sat in my lap and looked down the barrel of my 20 gauge. I took a peek as well and she was on the deer. I told her squeeze when she is ready. When she shot both deer fell. I thought the other one was out of the way but it was not. She cried because she thought she had messed up. I was jumping up and down! I told her that's a story she will tell forever. Good times

No children yet, but my brother had my nephew with us for his first kill--he was 8 at the time. I heard the shot, and I knew it came from their stand. Immediately texted, and a couple minutes later I get a response: "Yes, that was us." I immediately text back, but no response. As you can imagine, I lost my mind!

The cell signal was weak, so I decide to climb down a little early, and head over. As I get to their stand, I see them standing on the other side of the food plot. My heart was already racing, but seeing them out there I almost fell off of my 4 wheeler.

I pull up to see a nice basket 7. Not sure what was more wide--the basket or the smile on my nephews face! Turns out the reason my brother didn't respond is that he was too busy dealing with my nephew who was ready to jump out of the stand after the shot...

My brother says "Tell Uncle 'Sam' about your shot."

Nephew: Well, I was nervous...
Bro: Nervous?!? He was shaking the whole stand!
Nephew: Me and daddy decided this is the one we wanted. But I kept hesitating. Daddy kept saying "take your time, whenever you're ready".
So finally I just put the crosshairs on his shoulder like daddy told me, closed my eyes, and pulled the trigger!!!
SAM: Closed your eyes??? You shouldn't do that!
Nephew: Why not?
SAM: Bc you might miss!
Nephew: But Uncle Sam, I didn't miss....

I have the picture of him holding the deer up for the first time back at the camp with everyone around congratulating him. Him trying to hide that enormous smile was priceless.

This was last year when my son was 11. I've been primarily a duck hunter for the last 15 years or so. He's been going with me since he was 6 or 7 but over the previous couple of seasons he wanted to go deer hunting. Last season we were about to go duck hunt on a friend's property and I knew he had a few deer stands out there. He's a duck hunter too so no scouting, food plots, feeders, nothing to attract deer and no knowledge about where they travel or anything. I texted my friend the night before to see if he cared if we sat on a stand for a while. He says no I don't care, go ahead.

We duck hunted til about 9:00 then I said, okay let's go sit on a stand for a while. I brought along his little Rossi single shot in .223. I'm thinking to myself, we'll sit for about 45mins or an hour, he'll get bored and we'll leave. I randomly pick a stand on the property and we go sit in it.

Not 30 mins. after getting up there, I'm looking my phone and he says "Dad, there's a deer" I look up and sure enough a little 5 point is walking broadside at about 50 yards. At this point I'm having to calm him down, he's so excited. He aims and I'm like, "Just squeeze the trigger" Boom!, deer kinda flinches and trots off into the woods.

He's immediately sad because he thinks he missed. I knew it was hit. So we wait about 15 mins. until he can't stand it anymore. We walk out to where he shot it and I find a drop of blood. Sure enough we start seeing more and more until after about 40 yards, I say "look right there". It was laying dead about 10 feet in front of us. Perfect lung shot right behind the shoulder.

Since then, he wants to hunt anything that is in season. Duck, deer, squirrel, hog, dove, etc. it was one of the most exciting days of my life.

Since then he has worked, and saved up for, and bought his own .308, his own A300, and just bought a new bow with his Christmas money.

Sat in blind Saturday and watched son call in multiple sets of mallards in for the first time by himself. Just sat back with ol lab and worked jerk line. Note, this was on public land. Best hunt ever.
