Seed Crawfish for ponds

A guy I know just called me with the offer of delivering hundreds of pounds of seed crawfish (1-2") for ponds. Anyone interested?

I bet those would make good trout line bait or under a cork...

Someone on here seeded a 1/2 acre pond last year and had excellent results this year.

You can't be talking me. I have had okay results. This was from 4 test traps about a month ago.
I have yet to remove any. I seeded about 16 months ago. Right now the plan is to let the true survivors go another year as I'm not very pleased with the population density.

Aren't we getting to the "bug eggs on the shell makes them too hard" excuse window?

They are coming from Krotz Springs, but a guy is bringing me 20 sacks Friday. Most of them are spoken for, but I can get as many as needed.

How much a sack
The man told me $1.25/lb, and they come in a 40lb sack. so $50. Whole bunch of those little ones per/lb. I don't know how many, but a bunch.

I am out of town right now but will bump this next week.

To the OP, without knowing male/female ratio, all you're doing is buying expensive arse small crawfish, not necessarily good seed crawfish at all.
Clyde, since you haven't really started fishing it yet, rotenone the hell out of it and start over. That many whites already...you're gonna hate the production you get out of that.

It's funny. I only seeded it with hand picked select reds.
I never checked it before I started, I just drained it to make sure there were no fish. So the whites must have been in there all along.

What's the difference between whites and reds? Other than color...

Yeah. Good chance they were. They show up a lot more in sandy soils too. In many cases, they are really hard to get out.

Whites are far more aggressive. They will take over a pond. The fat turns green after the water starts to warm up even a touch. They have a slightly different flavor. They bury in far earlier than the red crawfish do, making mid season catches go way down, and most importantly, once there is any supply coming in at all, they can be essentially worthless because no one will buy them any more. I know that he may not be using the pond for marketing purposes, but just as a general rule.
Eta, they also die in a sack much sooner than a red crawfish will, especially as the water warms. Nothing like having 50-60 whites in a sack, and having 40 of them dead. While I know there can be hundreds in a sack, a pound and a half of dead crawfish in every sack will piss more folks off than you want to believe.

Well, I'm just getting a sack to keep alive in a vat for a couple weeks and use for trotline bait. Can't get many other types of bait for that price.

Yeah I'm with you there. I was just speaking to the stocking aspect. I have seen guys wanting to sell stock, guarantee that they are good, and they show up with 50 sacks of 80% males. At that point, good stock goes to them basically asking for money to cover the bait they used to catch em.
If you are going to put them in a tank, make sure it is a large tank...very large, even for 1 sack, very well oxygenated, and filled with pond water or well water. Regular tap water will kill em off pretty quick. You may be better off finding a ditch somewhere and dipping what you need with a dip net.
