A sea lion jumped out of the water Sunday in Sitka and bit the rear end of a 19-year-old sitting on the railing of a fishing boat, Alaska State Troopers said.

The man, who was not identified, was aboard the fishing vessel Confidence with his back to the water when a larger bull sea lion came out of the water and bit him, leaving several large scratch marks but no puncture wounds, troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said. The man's injuries didn't require medical attention.

"Thankfully he was wearing rain gear or it would likely have been worse," Peters said in an email.

Reports like this surface every few years in Alaska, Speegle said. In one, a fisherman in Petersburg in 2007 had a similar experience: a sea lion came out of the water and bit his backside as he was getting off the edge of his boat as it unloaded halibut. A 19-year-old man got hauled into the King Cove harbor in 2004 by a sea lion that lurched out of the water, chomped onto the seat of his pants, and yanked him backwards into the water. He wasn't seriously injured.

Troopers urged people around the docks in Sitka to use caution and encouraged fishermen and hunters to dispose of fish and animal waste properly by not dumping carcasses or scraps in the harbor.

To report aggressive sea lion behavior in Sitka, contact the Alaska Wildlife Trooper's Sitka Post at (907) 747-3254 or the National Marine Fisheries Service at (907) 586-7225.

I worry more about Sea Lions when kayaking than I do whales or Orcas.

Are they gonna put the sea lions down if they get a report?

They killed on in Petersburg, a fishing village South of here...when one was charging humans on the dock.

Can't stand them, especially when they are in the rivers stealing fish off peoples lines.

Yep....if not protected I know a lot of people that would have no problem killing them.

I saw a guy almost shoot one after losing 3 straight fish but there were too many eyes around so he just left cursing. Was kinda funny but I knew how frustrated he was too.

bullshite thing is they don't do a lot about them to protect a highly sought after natural resource. They swim up river and sit at the entrance to the fish ladders, but if you shoot one you're going to jail.

There's a haul out near one of my favorite kayaking spots. I've seen dozens of them coming toward me at once....scared the shite out of me.. Several of them buzzed the yak, and dived under but didn't bother me.

I've never been in that situation so I'm sure I'd crap my pants. They are so quick, strong, and agile I'd not stand a chance.

Yeah, Benjamin Island just north of town can have hundreds of them frickers at one time. Used to be you couldn't get within several hundred yards from the island but they've relaxed it a bit.

I saw a episode of Alaska state troopers where a dude shot one in the face with a shotgun. Those mfers acted like he killed a bald eagle.

Natives can kill them, I believe but they have special hunting and subsistence rights most of us don't have.

Now that I think about it, it might've been in California.

It was one of those nat geo shows. Either way it seemed like a huge deal

I saw it....it was wild justice with the fish and game wardens in CA.

They're serious about that. Odd in my mind considering the damage they do.

Had one of the motherfrickers appear on the bow of a skiff off Kodiak in '89. Big sumbitch only 4 feet from me. Made the skiff lean forward.

Startled me shitless and I pointed my 870 at it. Damn thing bit the barrel, but I didn't fire because I heard of all the legal hell someone else recently went through when they shot one of these bastards (this was during the ExxonValdez spill and everyone one hypersensitive to critters).

The fricker let go and slid overboard. Left marks on the barrel.
