Hey guys,
My family just purchased a lake house this past weekend and i've always wanted to have my own sea-doo. Now that I have a place to go and store one, I don't have a clue on where to begin, especially with all the models available.
I'm looking to drop $4-5K on one so if anyone can guide me on where to start I would greatly appreciate it.
Also how much can I expect to pay for insurance, a boat license, and whatever else might come up?

Speaking from experience, you will bored with it quickly. I ran the shite out of ours in high school, but it got boring in college and after. You really can't do much with it other than go fast and jump wakes.
I can't really give any other advice. Ours cost 9K new in 2003ish. Not sure what they're going for these days.

I tend to agree. Would rather a ski boat or pontoon instead.

I have a Yamaha VX 110. its an 05 model and I have had zero problems from it. From reliability I would say you cant beat them.
that being said, I hate the thing and the only time it is used is to pull kids on the intertube. It hardly ever gets ridden jsut to ride because it is the most boring thing you can do on the water.
IF....big if there..... I wanted one to play on just for me with no consideration for the kids or pulling a tube, I would look for a standup.

do not buy a 2 stroke. Do buy a Yamaha.

Me too. They're fun for about thirty minutes then you're wondering what the frick you can do with it other than just go burn gas.
I hate them with a passion. The people that gravitate to them tend to know next to nothing about boating if that much and are just generally a menace to everyone else on the water.
I've got a friend that rents them and according to him, if you're just determined to buy one, buy a used Honda. They got out of the business but his hondas last forever with little more than regular maintenance, the others don't hold up nearly as well.

Speaking as a former jet ski owner, I rather enjoyed my jet ski trips. I will agree that it's boring just by yourself but if you can find a buddy, or a group with one that makes it much more fun. There wasn't a weekend in the summer that we weren't on different bayous and rivers all over south louisiana and Mississippi. We even used to go out to Cat and Ship Islands when we knew the wind would be calm.
Only reason I gave it up was because my ski was at a shop in Chalmette for maintenance when Katrina hit and it was washed away, never to be seen again.

Haters gonna hate. I'm about to buy one too. Been looking at Yamahas for the most part, 2006 - 2009s with lower hours. Can't wait to rip by some dudes fishing on a calm day.

So if I were to buy one......then I would know next to nothing about boating.........but generally people that own them....................also own.....other boats.

Go look at used Yamaha 4 strokes. They are very reliable and you can find killer deals on them. People pay a lot of money for brand new ones, get tired of them, and sell them for hardly anything just to get them out of the way.
I know this because we just sold our 2004 and 2006 Yamaha FX Cruiser HOs for $9000. They retailed for around 10,00-11,000 each when we bought them new...both were under 150 hours and both were in pretty good shape aside from wear and tear from sitting outside under covers.
I also suggested Yamaha bc they use a simple inline 4 cylinder...basically a Honda civic motor under the seat. Sea Doos use a rotary, which are fairly reliable..but it's pretty tough to kill the Yamaha. Plus Sea Doo supercharges a lot f theirs now, which is cool and fast and fun...but they are maintenance nghtmares when something breaks...and they are more prone to breaking. you could probably find a very nice Yamaha vx cruiser (entry level bike, though the cruiser models have some bells and whistles) for around 4000, maybe less.
