Is it still a law that says shotgun barrels cant be really short? I remember you used to couldn't saws a shotgun off to short or it was illegal. I have beagles and rabbit hunt and have been wanting a 410 pistol, like an encore or something. They are high dollar and was thinking about getting a single shot and sawing it off short and building a new forearm and pistol grip for it. Just make my own rabbit hunting pistol. I would get what I was looking for and would be a cool project. I think its stupid that I cant build one that short but can buy one with a barrel that short, if that law is still a law.

The barrel must be 18" and the overall length must be 26".

Double check that though.

That's what I was afraid of. That's a stupid law and having to go by those lengths just kills my project.

How does a Judge fit that criteria, or any pistol you shoot rat shot out of for that matter? Must be a good ole beuracratic loophole.

Searched the web and this is what I found explaining why the Judge is legal...

quote:

It has a rifled barrel and is made to be fired with one hand, so it is a handgun. If it had no rifling and was made to be fired with one hand it would be an AOW (Any Other Weapon). SBS (Short Barrel Shotgun) is smooth bore shoulder fired firearm with a barrel length less than 18" and/or an overall length of less than 26"

REB summed it up well. But I think another way of putting it is that the gun is technically chambered in .45 Colt. The .410 shotshell just happens to be the same diameter and can be fired from it.

I see little use of the Judge outside of being a snake gun, FWIW.

There are several other that aren't rifled.

The Encore and the Commanche are both shorter than these laws and are not rifled.

If they don't have a stock, they aren't considered shotguns or rifles. This would categorize them as AOW (any other weapon).

... I think...

I have been searching to make sure I am right about them not being rifled but I cant find anything to prove that so I may be wrong.

Still is a stupid law.

inches make the difference.

The government killed Randy Weaver's family over ¼ of an inch.

Without question...

Hollywood really ruins it for gun owners. People assume if you have a suppressor, SBS, or SBR that you're gonna go on a spree and murder people without flinching. Really grinds my gears...

I was about to post that this is the kind of thread where the ATF shows up and shoots your family.
