I will be spending the next 3 years fishing the Pacific out here in Okinawa, and was looking for any recs for some bait casters. Any recs or info pointing me to some I should check out or avoid woukd be greatly appreciated.

What are you fishing for? Trout/redfish sized fish.....then any bass reel will do, just keep it clean in salt water use. I use Lew's speed spools which aren't very expensive.

Larger fish usually ambassadeur 7000 (inexpensive) or calcutta 700 (expensive). I doubt you'll be fishing larger fish out of a yak, but I don't know the area. I've seen people catching 60lb tarpon out of yaks, so maybe its needed there. If I'm consistently catching 30+ on fish, I'd want something bigger.

We are going to be targeting wahoo and mahi mostly I already have a legit jigging setup and I'm hoping to catch monsters out here lol. Thanks for the recs I've been looking at the calcuttas not sure if I want to drop that much change lol

Trolling?

I don't know if a calcutta is what you want for a wahoo. I guess it depends on the size fish. I have ever some 700s and they don't really get down to very high drag levels.

I guess that isn't a concern in a kayak.

Honestly, I'd go with a spinning reel. Like a Saragosa or Tunis in an 8 or 10k.

Japan makes tons of great reels, there's gotta be some good shops there? A shimano tld 15 or 25 is one of your best offshore reels for the money, if you want to spend more than that I'd go Avet or a similar Shimano torium, talica, etc.

Get a JDM reel. My brother was in Okinawa for 2 years and he brought some back. They're awesome.

My brother used TLDs and an ambassador 5500 and caught a lot of fish while over there. He would hitch a ride with commercial fishermen who would let him troll for a nominal fee while they rode to and from their fishing grounds.

All depends on what you want to spend. The Shimano TLD is about as cheap as I would go for wahoo and such. Not saying its a bad reel at all.

Tackle direct has Bogo Fin-Nors.

But TLDs and such aren't really baitcast, right? Wouldn't that just be considered a lever drag?

Definitely gonna be trolling as fast as my hobie will let me go lol. I just prefer to buy stuff that's gonna last and be durable doesn't have to be the most expensive but I won't shy away from spending the money on good high quality gear.

Yeah but he said mahi and wahoo so I assumed he meant conventional and doesn't need to cast.

Honestly the TLD's are great for kayak trolling and impossible to beat for the price imo: light, proven, dependable, and cheap so if you lose one overboard they won't kill you. Outside of that, I'd maybe get something in Japan as they may have crap that's not sold in the states.
