My job gives me the opportunity to travel this fair state of ours. I have always fished freshwater and have plenty of stuff to fish with. I am going to start bringing a couple of rods and reels with me and when I stay in places with salt water fishing close by, I would like to spend some time this summer in the evenings doing some salt water fishing from public fish docks and the bank. I was wondering if anyone could give me some pointers on what terminal tackle to have and use. Jig head sizes, jig bodies, colors, Gulp! shrimp and associated rigging, and artificial bait help would be greatly appreciated. I know I can use some of my freshwater stuff but I will need some saltwater specific gear also.

I use 1/4 jigs unless under a cork(which I hate), then I use 1/8.
Colors for me is lime or close to it. I like Deadly Dudley.

this, 3/8 for jigging, I'm also a fan of dudley's, definitely gulps, but I have been on a matrix shad kick( feel they have really good action to them).

honestly, you should get a guide for a 1/2 day trip in an area that you will frequent...tell him what you are trying to learn and he will be more than happy to help...he can show you baits, techniques, fishing spots, where to buy bait, etc...

Plus, I garantee you will have a hell of a good time and will be hooked on salt water fishing for life....

You are gonna be limited in fishing strictly from the bank but that's not to say you can't catch fish.

If using popping corks use nothing heavier than a quarter ounce jig head. The whole point is to simulate a shrimp and too heavy of a jig head will cause the bait to fall to quickly in between pops.

2 of the most popular and versatile soft plastic colors that I like are purple with a chartreuse tail and glow with a chartreuse tail. I'd start with these. You'll have to use trial and error to find the correct depth under the cork dependent on your fishing location.

Also pick up some gold spinners wether it be a solo spoon or an in line spinner with a plastic tail, they are both deadly for redfish.

Topwaters are great early in the morning. Dependent on if they are feeding on shrimp or baitfish in the area will determine wether to throw a popper or a walk the dog style.

Hope this helps.

Just be careful with the rip currents out there.
A young man died trying to save 2 females who were trapped in the rip last week out there.Girls survived but he did not make it.
Guy was in good shape and only 22 FWIW.
