Question for the OB Venice experts. I have heard the fog is bad this time of year. I have a project at work where I need to run from Venice marina to a platform near SW pass, Pass a lou and out of Baptiste collet. My question is, should our work boat have radar in case the fog rolls in while we are out? Or will we be okay without it? Is the bad fog something that happens quite often this time of year or is it a once in awhile thing?

TIA

3 different platforms? I'd have it, shite rolls in with a wind switch. If its warm and low wind it's almost guaranteed.

You taking water samples or running ADCP? Data dumps from the platforms?

How long would a single run take you in good conditions?

I wouldn't consider being down there from now until Mid May on a regular basis without it. Especially if you HAVE to get out to work at a certain time. It's not a question on if you will have fog this time of year it's how often and how bad. Any warm day this time of year the river will have fog.

This time of the year once the river comes up, fog can get real bad for a couple days at a time. Then you can get sea fog. I wouldn't even try to run the river without radar this time of the year. I have many hours logged running it and fog is only half the problem once the river gets high. Then you have to watch out for submarines(trees) just under the surface.

With a fog bank roll in on you, plan on spending the night without radar. And I hope y'all have VHF radios on board. One on 16 and a second on 68.

We are about to have the radar installed on our boat, but you know how the top brass have to do a cost benefit analysis for a big purchase. May show them this thread to help plead my case for radar.

We have one VHF. Whats the reason for having 2?

I don't run Mississippi River or Atchafalaya River without radar in fog, ESPECIALLY if it is for work.

My dads friend was on a crew boat that crashed into a barge at night and in the fog. All on board were in the hospital and luckily it was a glancing blow so no one died.

Also, MAKE SURE THE RADAR WORKS BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE DOCK. I had a boat captain lie to me before about that.

And you should probably require twin engines as well.

Talk your bosses into renting a boat for the day or two. That is probably much less expensive than buying and installing radar.

If I get to the dock and the boat doesnt have radar and its foggy I am driving back to the office.

I used to run it in a 13' bass tracker loaded with hunting gear and I'm alive to talk about it. That said, be careful, take your time and don't do what I did.

Yeah its best to have one...can't hurt.

You sampling for the feds, state, private contractor?

Have you done much of this type of work? Only ask because I get to do the same type of thing.

Love it...

Hard to believe you're doing work on the river in a vessel without radar. No brainier man, get one

Rent something that's bigger than what you think you need. When I work down there I always rent. You save time and money on maintenance and towing that mfer down there.

As someone who has worked for small and large firms, doing all kinds of field work all over Louisiana, if you can rent it, do that. Nothing more disturbing than calling a client to tell him you didn't get the job done because your company's shitty equipment failed again.

If they are dead-set on using your own boat without radar, search the picayune for an article about someone not making it home after hitting something in the fog and show it to the boss. then show him a picture of your family.

When are you going to run the river?

I run Venice just about every week and it's not as bad as some are making it out to be. If the wind is blowing out of the south around this time of the year, you can expect fog. Fog is the worst from dusk until about 10am. Some days (warm and south wind) it's thick all day but some days it's not as thick and burns off (from the sun) around 9-10am and doesn't come back until close to dark.

Venice to southwest pass can take you over an hour depending on where at in sw pass. From sw pass to pass a loutre can be another 30 min- hour and to baptiste is another 30min-hour. So it sounds like you have a lot of running to do.

Can you plan the days you go?

Just curious. How long is your vessel? What style. Aluminum? Outboards?

We have been running a 22 foot Scully with twin Honda 150's for the last 10 years sampling in the river from Baton Rouge to the passes. Its been a great little boat... But you gotta watch out for the wake thise big boys throw....
