Good morning OB

I have come across a guy selling a ruger sr9 with a 17rd magazine for $425.

is this a good price for this particular pistol?

Also, I am very left handed. It appears as if this model has a safety on both sides of slide which is what I am looking for.

any opinions on this gun would greatly be appreciated.

I have the SR9c and love it. That price seems a bit high for just having one mag though. I think they go for about $450 new and it comes with two mags

EDIT: Buds has the SR9c for $411 free shipping with 10-round and 17-round mags

Is it new? If it's used, does he have an approximate round count?

I have a Ruger SR9c and it is a fantastic firearm. It's seen probably 6-7k rounds and keeps ticking. The full size would probably be just as good.

If you're left handed you may want to check out the M&P series from S&W. They have ambidextrous controls on both sides (this includes the slide release). The SR9 does have an ambidextrous magazine release and an ambi safety, but it does not have an ambi slide release and I consider that more important than the other two.

But it all comes down to preference. If you want a simple opinion on the SR9:

1. Has a 1911 grip angle (I prefer it)
2. Ambi safety
3. Ambi mag release
4. Reversible backstrap on the grip (can fit a larger hand by flipping it)
5. Has a nice taper in the grip that feels very natural (not bulky at all)
6. Has a loaded chamber indicator (can be used by feel in the dark if needed)
7. Is very high value (great price)
8. 17rd capacity (pretty standard)

Things I changed on my compact model:

1. Removed the magazine disconnect safety
2. Changed the sights to fiber optic

If someone can link my review on my YouTube channel it may benefit you. I'm on my phone so unfortunately I can't do it right now.

thanks everyone. I talked him down over the phone. He said it has had 2 clips fired so approximately 34 rds. I am glad that it has all of the ambidextrous features. I think I am going to pull the trigger on this one once I look over it.

Any advice on looking at a used gun and not having the opportunity to shoot it? Is there anything to look for while inspecting?

If you are new to guns, then I would just buy a new one. Budgunshop.com has one for $411. A brand new gun will have some sort of warranty. If you buy a used one, you risk assuming that the warranty follows the gun.

Honestly, it sounds like this guy is just trying to take advantage of you a little bit. I would just buy a brand new one, have it sent to an FFL dealer near you, and then ask the guy to show you how the gun works. Then, you could sign up for some classes.

Great gun
That's pricey for a used one

Especially if he told you this verbatim:

At that price, I would get one new as well. I got mine for $419 at Precision range in Baton Rouge. That was brand new.

Just noticed the OP says "new gun owner."

I completely agree with Sabi here. Get some good training to be safe and competent with your handgun.

Damn those are really old. That was the first round of SR9s. But yes if it's the old one it's def not worth $425.

I have a SR9c and accurate and reliable. I paid $440 for it brand new. It came with two mags. I have been happy with it. It handles recoil well for its size.

If I had to list some complaints it would be the "plastic?" slide release--it just feels kinda cheap compared to my Glock. Also, my fingers catch the safety as I rack the slide back because I have big hands. The trigger breaks clean but is just a tad stiff. Otherwise, its a great gun for the price.

This is the one that he is selling. It has the safety trigger so it doesn't fall under the recall

ETA: we have discussed price. He said he paid 440 plus tax which is probably around 475 for it. Obviously if he isn't willing to budge, i'll look at new

Thats a nice piece. Id try to talk him down a little or just buy a new one.

Notice how the back half of the safety is above the line where the frame and the slide meet? When I grip the slide and begin to pull it back, my fingers hit the safety as well as when I guide the slide forward. I like the concept of the 1911 style ambi safety but wish it didnt interfere with my operation of charging the slide. Maybe you wont have the same issue? Either way, the SR9 is a nice firearm.

I am meeting him Monday morning so I am going to go look around town to see if I can put my hands on one to see how it feels before then. It seems to be a pretty popular model so hopefully I can do that and compare prices at the same time.

Dude, get a new one. I don't know why you're even entertaining his offer. Did you not see the one at budsgunshop? Brand new! How can you beat that? This guy is trying to take advantage of you.

$425 with one magazine?

Not worth that price. Offer $375 best.
