I'm looking for a solid roof rack and have never purchased one before. I'm hoping to find something that will be able to travel at highway speeds (70-80 mph) over long distances without issue. Any advice is appreciated.

Does your car already have a rack and you just need something to hold the bikes or do you need both?

Yeah, I have factory installed roof rack and crossbars.

I used to have a couple of these and really liked them, especially for the price. All my bikes were 9mm QR but I think they have something similar for other axles.

I thought this was going to be a joke thread about mounting a roof rack to a mountain bike.

I may be in the minority, but rethink the roof rack. I haul bikes around thousands of miles a year. I've always believed bikes are not engineered for the stresses (particularly the lateral swaying) which result from a roof rack, especially at 70 mph. Something in the fork will crack (if carbon) or bend (if aluminum) sooner or later. Really sucks to get to your race or ride, unload the bikes from up top, only to find one of the drop-outs pulled loose or something.

I also spent a metric f-ton of money on my bikes, so I want them tucked behind the vehicle on a hitch rack and protected from wind and road debris.

for what it's worth.

I had a Thule roof rack while living in Germany and would run the autobahn at 100mph+ with 2 bikes on top. Never had a problem.

Definitely. Better gas mileage and a LOT less noise. Hitch mount is the way to go unless its the look that you really want.
