As a huge hunter and conservationist and gun rights nut, I'm not going to shed one tear. And Frick the criminal regime in Zimbabwe.

That is pretty sad but at least he went out doing something he loves.
It is a pretty crappy example of journalism though and reeks of bias.

Care to explain your anger at this dead man?
Posted on 4/25/15 at 9:41 am to Da Sheik
So he was a killing one for someone to harvest the ivory?
Posted on 4/25/15 at 9:44 am to tigerfoot
No, he was scouting as a PH for a hunter client who was actually present with him.
No diff than a WT guide or Elk guide glassing an animal to see if it is shot worthy.
But the writer's purposeful misdirection seemingly worked on you.

Useful idiots don't understand that allowing hunting of elephants is the only thing that will keep elephants from being wiped out by poachers.

Held back on saying anything after reading the article.
I'm guessing this particular hunt was one where the US hunter paid a shitton of money to kill a nuisance elephant. And hopefully a large portion of said money would go toward conservation.
I Don't have any desire to kill an elephant but its good that there are people who will give the region money to kill one that is already slated for removal.

The only motivation by the local people and officials to control the poaching which mainly stems from the Asian ivory desire and consumption is the money that legal hunters bring in.
An immediate red flag for those reading was right in the title of the article. Tusks grow 7" per year and the average wild lifespan of African elephants is 56. So a PH would not be trying to measure the tusks on a "baby" elephant.

Well, I know rifles shoot from a distance. And I'm positive I don't want to be crushed by an elephant, so I won't be joining this but job on a hunt.........oh wait

Here is the most non-biased article I could find: (took a bit of searching) Zimbabwe times
ETA: and Bill Maher did a bit about Ian's death and said it was "good" LINK
quote:
"Feeling he was quite close to the elephant, Ian and his tracker Robert continued to follow the tracks in the hopes of getting a look at the ivory," Chifuti Safaris said. "They eventually caught up to the bull, spotting him at about 50m-100m. The bull instantly turned and began a full charge. "Ian and Robert began shouting in order to stop the charge. At very close range, Ian was able to get off one shot before the bull killed him," the statement said.

I understand that, and yet I still can't imagine making a career out of taking out douchebags to kill elephants and take facebook pictures.
Not glad he's dead or anything. It's just a risk of a dangerous job and not one he'll get a ton of sympathy over.

He is great friends with and hunted multiple times with one of my of my dad's good friends. I am glad he died doing what he loved.

I can understand that. It was his job, it had inherent risks. That being said being a cop, a figherfightwr, a high rise window washer, a lifegaurd, a roughneck, etc. all have risks. But we see no celebration of their deaths or misplaced vitrol based on either ignorance or denial of the economic, biological, legal, social, and conservation aspects of big game hunting.
