Researching Kayaks is harder than researching a car.

So many options out there. I was dead set on getting a beginner's kayak then I was going to step it up a bit like a Jackson or Nucanoe. Now I'm actually looking at the Hobie PA 12. I signed up for demo next Saturday. I'll be demoing the PA 12, the KC, and the Slayer Propel. The KC is interesting with that open layout and trolling motor mount. And I like the fact they are made by LSU guys in BR.

KC

I have one and absolutely love it. Ive fished out of the PA12 and PA14 and I much prefer the KC for the type of fishing I do. If you're gonna be fishing shallow marsh for reds, the KC is the way to go. If you're gonna try to chase trout in some deeper water, the PA is your winner.

Are you wanting some type of propulsion device for sure (trolling motor, pedal, etc)?

If not, Alxtgr has a sick loaded Slayer 14 for a steal price

he emailed me about the Slayer. I do like either the propulsion type or one's where you can quickly install a cheap TM. Because of price I'll probably end up getting the KC.

I would advise against KC. It will crack. No doubt about it. They will fix the cracks for free, but it still takes time out of your day to drop it it off and pick it up.

If you want to hook up a trolling motor (which you do, because paddling sucks), look into NuCanoe Pursuit. Same price but better made.

Make a spreadsheet that lists what's important to you and narrow it down to a few top candidates. You'll need to consider what type of fishing you'll be doing, how are you going to transport the kayak, what's your budget, etc. Talk to folks who fish the areas you want to fish and get their feedback.

I ended up getting the Slayer Propel13. I know it's not the best kayak for every type of fishing but it's great for my style. Don't try to find the perfect kayak because there's no such thing. I was also looking at the PA12, Cuda12, Ride115/MaxAngler, and the ATAK.

Just buy a Hobie Outback and be done with the research. Seriously.

Wait, the KC's crack??? If so, then I can't consider that. I'd like to get the PA12, but with tax and accessories I'd be looking at $4k. BTW, can you stand in the Slayer?

It's a common problem they have. They are great kayaks other than the cracking, but for that price, cracking shouldn't be an issue.

Definitely can stand in the Slayer. If you're looking to save some $$ check around for what you can find used. There's tons of used kayaks around.

If you're a member of the bayou coast club, you are eligible for a discount on kayaks from backpacker...

Yeah I found a Kayak Classifieds on Facebook and have been looking around. It's the accessories that make it so expensive.

Definitely, seems like even the smallest accessories are damn near $100. There's an OBer I know who might have either a used Slayer Propel or an Outback for sale soon.

ETA: Check Craigslist and Louisiana Sportsman classifieds too.

Someone from La Sportsman emailed me first. Same handle as you.

I never heard back. Not sure if my responses ever got to that guy.

That's me. Nice Yak, but too long and narrow for me.

You can do most of the stuff yourself for a fraction of the price. Rod holders in your crate, anchor system, stick anchor, etc.
