Anyone else had trouble doing this? I got my new upper in today and am trying to take off the muzzle break with channel locks and it ain't budging. Afraid if I try any harder I'll mess up the gun. Any suggestions?

I've always put the barrel in a vice, stuck a screwdriver through the brake (assuming you're talking about a standard birdcage) and it comes off easily.

You could soak it in lubricant over night or if that doesn't work you can always use heat. The best thing is the clean it fairly often.

I haven't tried a vice. The upper is brand new so being clean shouldn't be an issue

Is it pinned and welded? Barrel length can tell us this.

Vice is to avoid twisting the barrel.

Well then it shouldn't be too hard. As others have said, use a vice.

Put a small crescent wrench, or better the correct size of wrench, on it and tap the wrench with a hammer. Shouldn't take much to break it loose. You are turning it the right direction aren't you?

If you're looking into the muzzle,it would turn counter clock wise.

Vice with action block and armorers wrench or crescent wrench

Bring it to me at Bowie's if you can't get it and I'll take care of you

Thanks everyone for the advise. I'll try the vice and hammer tap tomorrow.

Carson, I appreciate the offer but 6 hours is farther then I'd like to commute to get it done...;)

That's a bit far If you still have trouble, let me know. We might have to make you a makeshift action block. Some of the muzzle devices come extremely tight. Get a crescent wrench wrench with a long, thick handle and don't be scared to hang on it.

Thanks, dog. I truly appreciate that.

Is it 16" to the end of the muzzle brake. Or is it close to 17". Barrel is measure by inserting a rod down the barrel with the bolt closed and measuring from the end of the rod to where it sticks out the end of the barrel.

Random spot to mention it to you... but you took my buddy AN on a deer hunt recently. I didn't realize you were good friends with his fiancé's dad. I'll be seeing you at his engagement party next weekend.

Some barrels like mine are 14.7" long with the brake pinned and welded on to make it a legal 16".

If yours is such I wouldn't be putting a crescent wrench to it.

If its welded will it have a crush washer? I'd guess not but don't know.
