Plan on setting out ten crab traps this weekend while I take the family fishing.

I know that I need to get a gear license. I'll be following guidelines of trap requirements.

Only thing I can't find info on, is where to purchase the stainless steel tags that need to be attached to the trap.

Called WLF, and they were no help.

I've tried Pierre Part Store, Hebert's has to order them, Southern wire will make them, but like 500 at a time.

I'm at a standstill here, and wanted to set some traps out, but like I said, I can't find these damn tags anywhere.

If anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it.

Location: St. Mary Parish

Do you have a picture, or description of hard plastic?

I seen they said that a plastic bait box marker would work, but I couldn't find a single thing on it via google.

I believe Gus' in Slidell can get you the steel tags. I know it isn't near you but an option if you want to drive.

get a piece of aluminum and cut it in strips.
then go to harbor freight and buy the stamp kit, just hammer you numbers into the metal. drill a hole in the strip and attach it to the inside of the trap with a zip tie

Besides the tags, make sure your escape rings are the right size. They went up in size starting 1/1/2017 and will go up again in 10/2017, I believe. I will look and see who made my tags after work and post.

This was going to be my suggestion as well.

ETA; Ride to houma and buy some Stamps from Harbor Freight, then run across and buy an aluminum threshhold from Lowes or Home Depot. You should be able to get 10 tags out of that threshold easily.

No specific requirements, make them yourself as other have suggested. You can use an old soda or beer can. Just cut in strips.

Effective Nov. 15, 2017 and thereafter, a minimum of three escape rings shall be placed on the vertical, outside walls flush with the trap floor or baffle with at least two rings located in the upper chamber of each trap. The minimum sizes of rings shall be 2 and 3/8 inches. Any crab trap constructed of wire mesh 2 and 5/16 square or greater is exempt from escape ring requirements.

That was taken straight from the recreational booklet. Yeah it's to let the smaller ones out.

I was somewhere the other day, maybe a Petsmart or Walmart, and they had a machine that made dogtags for $1. You could get quite a bit of info on one.

We just write the info on paper and put it in an empty plastic water bottle inside the trap. Not sure how it would fly as I've never been checked..

This is where I had my tags made, it is in Harvey. Have to call/e-mail and tell what you want. Mine were $1.40 each.

Just got off the phone with WLF, I told him my situation, that I couldn't source any locally, and that anywhere wanted a minimum of atleast 100 or 500.

I told him I had some brass tags I bought from a hardware store and can engrave them with an engraver with my license number.

He said that was fine.
