Recommendations on rod/reel combos for light saltwater and freshwater?
Posted by LSUperior on 3/27/17 at 10:48 am00
Just started getting a little more into fishing and was looking for recommendations on 2 types of rod/reel combos.
1) Freshwater bass/sac-a-lait. I like the smoothness of the baitcasters for bass fishing, but wasn't sure if that would also be appropriate for crappy/sac-a-lait fishing too?
2) Light saltwater for specks and smaller reds, etc.
I was thinking about just getting a lightweight spinning rod/reel combo and just be able to use it for both? Any recommendations that aren't too expensive, but well built? Looking for a set under $50.

For a great buy on a spinning outfit that would do both, get a Cabelas Pro Guide Spinning in 4-8/10 lb and a 1500 series Daiwa reel. The Legalis is usually on sale. Fine reel for the money.

I have a Shimano Sienna 1000 on a cabelas ultralight rod for crappie. You need bigger for specs, reds, & bass IMO. And I would up my budget on the saltwater setup. Basspro has Penn Battle II combos for $120. Get 3000 size--one rod n reel to rule them all.

I'm a huge fan of Penn reels and ugly stick combos.

I have a few different setups.
I have a Penn Fierce II 2500 combo that is fine. I use it mainly for throwing a cork. It is slightly on the heavy side but it works.
For baitcast reels, I stick with Shimano (when I can get them on sale) and Lew's tournament series. I have found from experience that those 2 hold up better in salt water over time. Plus both, especially Lew's, have great customer service.
For Rods I have Duce, All Star, and H2O Ethos. I love the H2O ethos line of rods. They are good rods but if anything happens Academy makes it so easy to retun. I actually had my kayak smash the tip of my H2O rod between the last 2 eyes and Academy took the return without question. All the H2O rods have a bar code on them so you don't have to keep the receipts. Just bring it into Academy and they scan it and give you store credit for the price. It's great, so you never have to worry about when a rod breaks.
