I have used some nicer rods in the past (Scott) but have only been upwards of 10 times so am still fairly new to fly fishing. Looking for a recommendation on a cheap fly rod.

What do you consider "cheap"

Most consider Scott to be on the cheap end.

Really? The ones I looked at were $700. I've seen Orvis rods for $200 and assumed they were good quality.

Most have said that Scott Meridian is the best fly rod to hit the market in a really long time. I want to cast one.

@OP What kind of fish are you after?

I'd like to use it to fish NC and TN rivers for trout but I also do a lot of fishing for reds in saltwater and would like to use it for that as well.

Temple Fork Outfiitters are pretty hard to beat for the price.

Ok yeah those are more in my price range. That Scott Meridian rod runs upwards of $1100

you're really going to want two rods. Maybe a 6 or 7 with a fighting butt could cover both, but a 4 or 5 and an 8 or 9 will serve you much, much better. TFO, allen, orvis all have decent rods at not outrageous prices.

Echo makes some very good budget rods. The mystic reaper gets good reviews but I haven't thrown one yet. Not a TFO fan but a lot of people really like the BVK and the Pro II.

You could spend a life time casting sub $250 rods. You're just going to have to get out and cast a few and see which one you like.

I have an orvis clearwater that I really like. Wasn't too expensive either I think around $200

Have you ever tried an Orvis Encounter? I've read they are good for amateurs.

Get a 8.5 or 9 foot 5 weight for Tennessee, Western NC trout fishing.

Lots of fun spots out there to fish. Got any spots picked out yet?

I'd get a TFO, that's what I started on in this area and it was fine. I have a bunch of Orvis stuff now because I have a friend that works for them. I don't have any of the cheaper ones though.

I am looking for a rod for reds right now, won't be fishing that way much, so I am probably going to get a TFO BVK 8 weight.

If you're trying to get away with fishing trout and redfish on one rod, I'm guessing you're looking at 6wt or a really fast 5wt. I fish a 5wt or 6wt for most of the summer for slot fish. The encounter rod from orvis in those weights is ok but the TFO and Echo are better rods for the money. there are lots of good rods in that range that are better than the encounter. Not that the encounter is a bad rod, but if I remember correctly It only comes in an outfit.

More important than the rod is the fly presentation to the fish. Go get a cheaply Cabelas fly rod and have some fun.

The times I have been were on the South Holston and Watauga and a few others. Usually go outside of Johnson City and Maggie Valley / Boone / Hendersonville. I have also been near Sylva. Usually a good time. I went outside of Snowshoe in WV once. I'm trying to find a few places that are as close to Charlotte as possible. Hendersonville is the closest I'm aware of (around 2 hrs). I fish for reds in Chalreston occasionally and have caught plenty of trout down there on the spin cast which I could just as easily catch on a fly rod.

BTW thanks for all of the suggestions gentlemen.

This one got good reviews and isn't to bad.

The one I'm looking at is a 9' 5 wt. So that is better for NC and TN as opposed to fishing for reds in sc right?

What size is ideal for fishing reds?

For trout in East TN I'd probably lean more to a 4 wt.

For saltwater 7 or 8wt.

Holston and Watauga are amazing places. Great float trips there as well. Definitely the closest for you in the Tennessee area.

There is a lot of good stuff in West NC though. I base out of Sapphire a few times out of the year and hit up the creeks and rivers around there. Lots of good fishing.

If you like going to the Smokies, it's a fun trout area. Trying to get the grand slam of a brown/brook/rainbow in the same day can be a fun little challenge in the park. Trout is mostly real small up there though. You can go pay to fish the trophy section in Cherokee if you want to fight some big ones.
