I've muzzle loader hunted for elk in New Mexico and had some success in the past, but the outfitter I used has gone out of business and the private ranch was sold. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I hunted the Gila NF 16A back in 2007. I wouldnt recommend the outfitter I used as the groups overall success was pretty poor. Would be curious to see who gets recommended.

Unless they've changed the regs I'm pretty sure all big game in New Mexico has to be hunted with a licensed outfitter. I actually had to provide the outfitter and their information when I purchased my tag.

I finally got in touch with my old outfitter, he now runs hunts out of Ruidoso out in the desert. Has anyone ever long-rifle hunted elk in flat, desert terrain?

You do not have to have an outfitter to hunt elk in NM

I can't recommend one, but I will say hunting elk in the mountains & hills in New Mexico is fun and quite a challenge. Definitely worth the time and money.

It's true, but choosing a licensed outfitter ups your chances of drawing a permit as a nonresident.

Draw Quotas
State Law now requires:
• 84% of public draw hunt licenses go to New Mexico residents,
• 10% of public draw hunt licenses go to residents and nonresidents contracting with a New Mexico Registered Outfitter,
• 6% of public draw hunts go to nonresidents who choose not to use a New Mexico Registered Outfitter.

I think landowner tags are a free for all. It's been almost a decade for me but I knew there was a reason I chose to apply with a guide.

New Mexico also eliminated non resident public land cow elk hunts and non resident hunting on state wildlife areas.

Landowner tags for non residents for bulls and cows are not subject to a draw, but the price for bull tags can be high.

My guide has a landowner tag that he's offering for $3,000. It's on a 1X2 section ranch in the desert at the bottom of the moutnains. The ranch has an alfalfa field that draws the elk in around November/December. So, I'm basically getting a guided hunt for $3,750 including non-resident hunting license. Flat terrain, spot and stalk. He said there aren't any trophies, but has had good success with some upper 200 5X5s and a non-typical 7X7.

I went on an archery hunt two years in a row at Fishtail Ranch in Chama. Lee and Valerie Weiss run a great operation there. They have a lot of nice elk taken every year. I have been wanting to go back for a rifle hunt but I haven't been able to make the time. They do book up early so you may want to call them and see what is available.

I don't have any recommendations but, I may be headed up to northern New Mexico this October to hunt with a friend who now lives up there.

$3,750 covers everything? Lodging, meals, etc?

It's not a bad price for a bull elk hunt if the success rate is high. I gotta be honest though, if I'm going to NM I'm aiming for 300 or better. For another $750-1,000 plus a tag you may be hunting for a much higher quality bull.

No worries- Scott's a good friend of mine- he started it all on his own when his mom decided to retire in that area. Guy does a ton to help the community there and has quite a following with the country music star hunters.

I think you'll love it- coonass hospitality on an elk hunt! Only at LSU!!!!
