Rats in chicken coop

I'm finding rat droppings in my nesting boxes. I'm sure they are getting into the coop at night to eat chicken feed. Any suggestions on rat killer/ poison that won't be harmful to the chickens?

Chickens will kill mice, they must be pretty brave.

Store feed in trash can with locking lid.
Pick up any uneaten feed at night.
Get a cat.

Sounds like the title to a #1 hit country song.

Dude, that vid was awesome. Rats are nasty f'ers. I store all my feed in containers with lids but I do have a feeder in the coop that usually has some left over in it. Put a good dent in the population this summer when they showed up in my garden eating my tomatoes but I used poison for that.

How bout the dude videoing sitting on the bucket? Damn rat runs toward him and he never budges. I'd have been squealing like a girl.

I have a raised coop and had similar issues, I screened in under the coop and that is where there food is now - easiest fix remove open food and water from coop, generally speaking they are either laying or roosting so there is no need for it in the coop.

The food and water is in the 5x5 run under the coop. I usually let them out in the morning and close the gate at night but do occasionally leave them in there all day which is why I've always had their feeder and water in there. I guess I need to just change my set up and only feed them during the day outside of the coop.
