Ranger vs. Honda SxS

In the market for a side by side. Think I have it narrowed down to a Honda pioneer 1000-5 or a Ranger 900. Ranger has a lot more options but I've always had good luck with Honda and the convertible back seat/bed is a real selling point for me. I know the Ranger has ruled the side by side market for years. Anybody recommend the Honda?

For 23k you might as well buy a truck

I like the Honda. Very quiet running machine. They haven't been out long enough to see how they hold up. The big red UTV seems to hold up well and their atvs last forever. I and several buddies own Rangers. The rangers are nice machines but rather loud. The Vikings are nice too. Rangers seem to go through hub bearings and axles but we hunt sandy soil areas. Polaris parts are easy to get. The Rangers seem to have more cab room. All three are good machines. I'd probably go Honda if I was buying brand new.
Most pipeline companies are running rangers but I'm starting to see more Hondas. Make sure you can service what ever you get easily. Dealerships are pricey.

Bought the Polaris 900 last month after much research. Was leaning toward the Honda at first . Both have their merits , comes down to personal preference. Drive both , keep an open mind , and talk to as many owners as possible . You really can't go wrong with either machine . The ride and overall feel of the Polaris is what swayed me .

By the time I put a cab on it and some other goodies it was over $28K, just a wee bit out of my range for a toy

Check out Intimidator. It is made in Batesville, Arkansas. They are nice machines. I drove them at Outdoor Power in Woodville, MS.

Friend has Ranger crew diesel and gas. Both are less than a year old and constantly in the shop. Just have not been impressed. Would seriously evaluate other options

Have had a ranger 900 for three years now like it a lot. Knock on wood not an issue yet...

The honda 1000 is a great idea poorly executed. The oil actuated trans is completely clueless and jerky until it gets boiling hot. It will sweat you out of the cab if you stop for 5 minutes or so and then hop in. If you forget to tow only in low, you WILL destroy the clutch pack, $2200. You might also get debris into the trans, an extra $1400 on top of that. They are am absolute bitch to work on. They only have 66 hp.
If you are set on the pioneer, the 700 is the better choice. If you want the 1000, make damned sure you get an extended warranty. It'll pay for itself 5x over.
The polaris... The belt drive requires you to run it hard to preserve belt life. No feathering the throttle, on or off, nothing in between. The unit itself is very reliable you do the maintenance they tell you to.
If you dont, 50/50 shot it's a pile of shite in five years.

I talked to 7-10 Ranger owners , a couple of hard core mudders had belt issues . A good friend has a 2010 (Ranger 800) , never changed a belt . Same guy bought a newer Ranger - no issues.

A couple of things . Father in law bought a Honda Pioneer 700 a few months before our purchase . The Honda's engine is under the seat - feel the heat! He didn't drive the Ranger before his purchase-wishes he had- he prefers my Polaris . I also drove the Intimidator and Mahindra(made by Intimidator). I preferred the Polaris, but did like some things about the Intimahindra. Do your homework and good luck!

Any attempt to take off slowly wears the belt.
Just give it some gas and go.
I got over 6000k miles on my original belt on polaris's old belt system from 98. Probably more than that, that's just when I sold the bike.

Good advice Rando , thanks . What model do you presently own ?

Have a 2011 800 Ranger that has given zero problems. Gets abused on an almost daily basis.
It also went 5' under water last August. Took 1/2 day to get back in operation.

Looking at either the canam xd3 or the rzr xp 1000 for my new one.
Canam is either bulletproof or crap, polaris needs tinkering to always be at 100%.
Leaning polaris.
Hoping yamaha comes out with a new turbo yxz 4 seater.

Thinking about getting a Defender HD10 6 seater. Just worried about it being reliable.

Total crapshoot on cam am. The must make half their bikes on Friday afternoon.
I could have gotten you the hookup on that pioneer 1000. But I told you it sucked.

Yeah, that was the only thing I worried about. Still searching as of now. It needs to have 5 or 6 seats for me whatever it is.
