What kind of dirt to fill in? All Top Soil, Native Soil, or mixture of Garden Soil, Peat Moss, etc.?

me too, garden soil and composted manure
too much sand and the water will just run out of the bed

top soil with some peat moss mixed in at the start of every year to keep it light...

I'm thinking about using a soaker hose this year for my jalapeños. Does anyone have any recommendations on a hose end timer?

I normally just use garden soil with mulch over the top to retain moisture.

Garden soil with mulch or pine straw. I also add in composted leaves twice a year.

I find all timers to be pretty crappy...I would buy two of the cheapest you can get your hands on.

This year I'm thinking about building a counter height raised bed probably 3'x5'. I've never done a standing one before. Are you guys just using plywood on the bottom and drilling drainage holes or what?

I put weed block fabric on the bottom.

people typically use 1/4" hardware cloth for the bottom, but be warned...raised beds dry out very quickly. you basically have to water them every single day. I would probably try to lay something like shade cloth over the hardware cloth just to slow down the evaporation rate a little.

I'm going to try a straw bale garden this year. Just moved to a house near the ocean in Florida and the "soil" is mostly sand. Straw bales look easier than a raised bed.
The deer will be very happy, my back property line is a wildlife refuge and I get a lot of critters on the property.

The hardware cloth will hold all the weight of the soil and like 4 jalapeño plants in a 3'x5'x10.5"?

I normally water daily anyways but this year I'm looking into a soaker hose with a hose end timer to streamline and make it more painless.

Mix manure and top soil and some kind of fertilizer

1/3 peat moss, 1/3 blended compost, 1/3 vermiculte or perlite.
Thank me later for your nice, loose, rich soil.

Just cut a small slit in the bottom of a plastic milk jug. Fill it with water and place the jug near your plant. It will drip water very slowly and isn't nearly as expensive or time consuming as fooling with that soaker hose and timer, etc.

What is the best time of year to plant a Raised Garden Bed?

I usually maintain about 4-6 jalapeño trees a season. They need approximately 2 inches of water weekly per plant and I also restrict water at certain times to induce "heat" shock. I'm not sure the milk jug will give me the exactness I'm looking for, but thank you for the suggestion.

What are you planting. For example, I'm primarily a Jalapeño gardener, but I also grow tomatoes and carrots. I plant my jalapeños late February usually and my tomatoes mid-February.
