getting one mounted on my bumper and the guy is trying to sell me on a smittybilt xrc 10 comp.

saying i don't need to spend the money for warn, superwinch, etc... same quality blah blah blah. might not get much use but it gets muddier than shite up here so i'm thinking i might not need to spend 12-1500 on a winch
please enlighten me

As warn???

The thing with a winch is, the only time they break is when you're using them, and the only reason you're using a winch is because you are royally fricked.

What are you putting it on? I wouldn't be scared of a 10k lb smittybuilt on a little toyota, but if you're putting it on something heavy where you'll really be working it I wouldn't trust it.

How much cheaper is it? My warn is 20 years old with a ton of very hard use on it and it still pulls hard and fast.

Warn is the bench mark everyone else tries to compare to. Buy this and be assured it'll work when needed.

will be used for trucks. from full size single cab to 4 door 250's. around $550 vs $1200 for superwinch w/ same specs

You're gonna fry a 10k lb warn if you're pulling hard on shite like that unless you are religious about snatch blocking.

For 3/4 ton and bigger stuff you should get at least a 12k

16.5 would be MUCH better.

Is it going to be on a receiver hitch mount? Is PTO an option?

ETA: Pay attention to the duty cycle and all that bullshite. If you pay attention to it and actually abide by what the manufacturer says to do you'll probably be fine with it. Problem is, people in stuck trucks usually don't give a shite about the specs.

I have a friend with a Smittybuilt on a Jeep and he is very happy with it. Granted a Jeep is much lighter and he's probably only used it a handful of times.

Tabor is made in mexico with warn parts if that's still around. Supposedly some good reliable winches for much less than warn.

Should be used every time, regardless.

OP, I had one of those Smittybilt winches on my Jeep and it worked fine. For the price, I say go for it.

This.

I have had it for about 10 years. I just keep moving it from truck to truck as I buy a new one. When you need a winch, you need it. Bad time to rely on cheap.

I pretty much never do. I usually need the whole cable.

Tabor 12k

This one is $900. Just another option that's reasonably priced, compared to the ~$1800 you'd pay for a warn or SW 12k

appreciate it fellas. solid advice as usual. ill be the first to tell tell you i dont know shite about them. we've had winches in our race car trailer to load cars and thats about it. im getting a bumper put on so i figured id knock out 2 birds b/c of how nasty it gets up here. anywhere off the highway is probably 4"-9" of gumbo mud.

Google the test Four Wheeler did about a year ago- they dunked them and ran them until they popped- did about 10 different brands. I think Engo- which was started by the Mile Marker guys actually came out as the best value.
