If you were to lease land for hunting deer, what's the furthest away from home you would lease?

It all depends on your personal situation and how much you will get to use it. At this time in my life, I am not set up to spend numerous weekends in a row away from home during hunting season due to my family life. I love being at the camp just as much as anyone, but the feeling of laying in bed with my three year old son without the daily hustle of running off to work is well worth it to me. He's not old enough to keep occupied in a camp setting for an entire weekend just yet, but will be in a few short years.

I've currently got an open invite to join a lease an hour and a half away as well as one 15 minutes from my house. I need to make a decision within the next week. The local one will give me many more options in my personal life while the other one provides better hunting with a great camp arrangement. I'm going to choose the local option for at least two years and do my good quality hunting out of state once a year during that time. Five years from now, my son and I will be spending as much time at a camp as possible.

Yeah, I have shared custody of an 8 year old girl, so that certainly is a factor.

What I was thinking about was more along the lines of how far away is conceivable when setting up the property and what not. I know it can be a lot of work especially if it's a virgin property. How long of a drive would become impractical?

As 4 said. It all depends. Does your wiork afford you the extra time to drive? If so, will you? IMO anything over an hour to an hour and a half requires a good camp setup

For me, that would require it being enjoyable for wife and kids, good people around are the priority, good hunting would be a great plus

Those setups are pretty pricey

I am looking at a local piney woods deal next year cause house to stand is 35 minutes. My boys are involved in shite all Fall, the opportunity to head out for just a morning or evening hunt will not happen with a long drive for me until they slow down in like 14 years

I left house at 3:40 this morning, to my current lease, that sux, hunting is good here and I may keep both next year, we will see. I don't mind limited hunts up here because I have a lot of deer here. Def wouldn't frive 2 hours for a garhole, unless you really just love the camp stuff. i like it two or three times a year, after that I want my shower and my bed and my football watching

Have a family obligation up here this afternoon up here so I decided to come make a hunt. Wife is doing the La Marathon half tomorrow so leave here after funeral and drive to BTR.

Point being, you just need to get what you wil utilize best with your resources

Under two hours gives you a chance for day hunts without overnight. It also allows for trips up to fill feeders, check cameras, etc.

The club 5 hours away is great hunting, but we almost always make it a 3-4 day weekends.

Under 2 hours, due to what others have said. I have a 2 year old and work shift work, so I spend enough nights away from the house as it is. Where I'm hunting now I can leave early one morning stay one night and be back to bathe and tuck the little guy in without feeling guilty. Also that expensive mattress with pretty lady on it is way more comfortable than a couch.

If I had the opportunity to hunt within 30-45 minutes from the house and be able to shoot a decent deer every year I wouldn't travel north at all

All my buddies who work 5-2 have leases that are pretty close less than 2 hours. I have some buddys who are tow bkat contains that work 14-14 and hunt in Arkansas 8 hours away. It's all in your situation.

1.5 hours would be my max for me to actually get my monies worth.

I wish I knew of a lease for next year within 1.5 hours of Mandeville

I have a lease with my 2 brothers that totals about 1200 acres in Alabama 5 hours away. I work a week on and a week off. My kids are grown and my wife likes deer meat. I hunt every other week at least 4 days. She comes sometimes for the camping. Plenty deer and 1 brother lives there. I have never been part of a club before. I always hunted public land. This is so much better.

Depends on the lease too. Am I going to have to spend half the summer there getting ready for the season or is it one I just show up and hunt.

3 hrs for first 6 if I can just show up and shoot shite

I have one that's 8 hrs now but it's so cheap I can't let it go.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm a nurse, so I can work my schedule around some things. One tract I was looking at looked pretty nice but was in lower Arkansas. According to google maps it was 5 1/2 hours away. Seems a little far, but the price was nice and the pics looked good. I'm trying to decide if it's even worth it to take a drive and look at the land.

Comes down to priorities. I was in a great club for years and I hunted and fished often. Had everything you could want in a club, but it was 2 1/2 hours from home.

When I had kids, it wasn't worth it for me to be away from home for an entire weekend. Joined an inferior lease 30 minutes from the house until I could find a better piece of property, which happened this year.

Get to start over with a big enough tract with 4 guys and do things the way we want to - putting in fields, new stands, etc. But the best thing about this lease is that the kids beg me to take them to the woods every weekend.
