Every bit of research I do, I see everyone say avoid Briggs and Stratton engines (Snapper, Craftsman, Toro) which are the more cost effective models normally.

Should I just suck it up and buy a Honda 217HYA and be done with it, or can quality be found with B&S mowers?

I'm looking for a 190cc self propelled because my grass is thick as hell and ground is like a sponge (tough to push mow and a riding leaves tire marks).

If you can't get the HRX, get the HRR. My HRR is the best mower I've ever owned or used. All of the 190cc engines are the same. Mine is the HRR with electric start and I wouldn't change anything if I had to do it again.

Honda with composite deck will be the last mower you ever have to buy. I'm on year 7 with mine and it looks and runs like brand new.

The B&S engine in my Toro is fantastic.

I have a Gravely 34" waw. Had it since 2011 and have put it through hell mowing a 3/4 acre lot.

It has a 16 hp (I think that's what it is)Briggs and Stratton motor. The oil gets changed once a year. That's it.
No issues at all.

ETA: if you buy a self propelled mower get one that pulls with the rear wheels. Ones with front wheel are basically worthless.

I'm not sure about the self propelled but Honda makes the riding mover engines for craftsman now.

I have a Toro Super Recycler. It is fine cutting my mutt grass at the new house, but at my old house with really thick St. Aug, it didn't do so well.

If your grass is thick, go with the biggest hp engine you can afford

Yea, I'm pretty sold on the 190cc HRX, not sure I want the blade clutch, seems like a luxury item that I don't really need, so may save myself 100 bucks. Was interested in the older HRR line, but their VKA model is a 159cc, which may be enough, but I'd like if they had a 190cc model like the HRXVKA.

This is so wrong. Front is vastly superior.

From what I have read, rear gives more traction and better for bagging. Front has better maneuverability but any unevenness may lose forward propel when front wheel right up.

Have seen that most say RWD is superior for most user needs though FWIW.

Found a few of these in 160cc, but the 190's are B&S.

You are correct. Plus, sometimes you need to pop up the front end to get over something. Having RWD helps a lot

Traction is never an issue. Maneuverability is.

Uh, I'm not trying to Formula 1 my mower. I go up, do a 180, and come back. Rinse and repeat

It depends what you want.

Seems like you are worried about thick grass.

If you don't have a lot of turns or items in the way look at rear wheel drive or and with high wheels.
Some mfg's in the $399 range have rear wheel drive caster wheel units if you have a lot of turns.

Yes, Honda engines are nice but pricey due to they are not OHV.

In a rear wheel, awd, or caster wheel with rear wheel drive the mfg will have an engine powerful enough to handle the job. You may see kohler, Briggs, or exclusive engine made by the mfg of the mower. They all will give you good service if you change the oil once a year for avg use and change the air filter.
