Question about building a SBR

I want to build a 300 blackout SBR. I am going to start with a stripped lower and build piece by piece.
My questions are at what point do I need to start getting involved with NFA paperwork? What's the process for staying legal during and after the build? I have no experience with this. I do know that I need a nfa gun trust at some point.
I appreciate any help and guidance on this matter.

Not needed, but makes the application process a helluva lot easier. As said in another thread earlier, an easy way to go about it is to build a pistol and convert it over to an SBR once your stamp comes in.

If you have an AR pistol, or a sig brace you can gather your parts. If you don't have one of those above, don't buy an unpinned barrel under 16" without a stamp.
You should start the trust now, with anticipated changes in the trust coming this summer...

You don't want to have a SBR/pistol upper without a pistol lower or registered SBR lower.
You can collect your parts such as barrel, upper receiver, and handguard. Just don't assemble anything till you get your SBR lower registered, unless that is if you have a pistol lower.

Thanks for the advice guys. Looks like I'll do a pistol and then convert it.
I'm getting my trust next month. I plan on getting a couple suppressors also.

I just emailed the guy to set mine up today. Definitely want to get one now before they change things.
I'm assuming existing NFA trusts will be grandfathered in if any legal chances occur?

I have another question about an SBR. I've read that if you have an SBR the receiver has to be engraved with the trust name and whatever else info. If that's correct can you just use a dremel tool to engrave the info onto the lower?

There are specifications that need to followed for the depth of the engraving. Lawd only knows how they'd bust you for something like that. But, since this is a very meticulous process, might as well play along by the rules.
Not sure on the specs, though

You can do it however you like, just bring it to a trophy shop if they can do it while you wait. Id either send it to someone or see if there is a jeweler or someone else to do with a laser engraver though. Just cant leave it with them unless the have their FFL/SOT.

ATF 5300.4 in 27 CFR 479.102 (page 92) describes what is necessary to engrave on a SBR or SBS when one is manufacturing. This is not necessary if you purchase one that is already manufactured as it will have been done for you.
1) On the Frame or Receiver the Serial number;
2) on the frame, receiver, or barrel the following additional information;
A)The model;
B)The caliber or gage;
C)Your name or name of the Trust in the case of a Trust (no abbreviations are permitted for the Trust name);
D)The city and state (you can abbreviate the state with the official 2 digit state code)
The above mentioned information must be engraved, casted, stamped (impressing) or otherwise conspicuously placed or caused to be engraved, cast, stamped (impressed) or placed to a minimum depth of .003 inch and in a print size of the Serial number shall be no smaller than 1/16 inch.

check out silencer shops trust. I just ordered a Supressor and bought the stamp through them with my trust. They are incredibly easy to work with and very thorough with great communication.
If they process trusts like they do the sale and atf form submission process, you will not be disappointed.
