I tried to buy a rifle this weekend and the guy said my purchase was delayed. He said it could take up to 30 days but on the FBI's website all I find is 3 days. Is it 30 or 3?

Also I read the requirements for being delayed and I don't fit into any of em. Idk maybe someone has a similar name as mine. Is getting delayed a standard deal? Anyway I can check to find out the reason for the delay?

Im in LA. I've bought a shotgun and a rifle before with no problems but that was over 10 years ago.

Yes, it's 3 days, yes it's a standard deal, and no you can't check. We have people that never get delayed, and some that get delayed every single time. Usually they call the next day with a proceed and you can go. If 3 days pass, you can go get it

I've got a fairly common last name. Sometimes I get delayed, sometimes I don't. When purchasing through my FFL, if I get delayed, he will check again after a few minutes and it usually clears. If not, it never takes more than 3 business days.

You can get delayed for a number of reasons/factors (incorrectly filling out your 4473 with abbreviations, FFL inputting information wrong, common last name, etc.).

Alright thanks guys. Yes it was at academy. Actually thankful that it got delayed as I found a rifle at a different store I want instead. Hopefully there's not another delay at that store.

I get delayed almost every time I buy a gun for the past 2-3 years. It usually is less than a day. I have a very common last name and the last guy said if you have a TWIC it almost 100% of the time will come back delayed. Which makes no sense at all.

I never did get why a TWIC card would cause a delay. Its definitely not 100% delay. I have had a TWIC card since they were required, and I've bought probably 8 guns since and haven't been delayed once.

With Academy(not sure if its the same in every state) they require a pass, not the typical 3 days to wait.

It is the same here in Louisiana. If the FBI doesn't call back and give you a pass they won't release the gun to you

Which rarely happens. They assume after the 3 days without the fail, that the gun was released

Picked mine up last year without a pass - I had to keep checking on it though they were not very good communicators

I have bought at least 3 guns this year including a "black gun" that I promptly lost in a boating accident.
Two at Academy and one at another store. I was in and out WITH the guns in an average of about 45 minutes. I have never had a problem like you describe over the years.

Got a buddy that gets delayed every time at Academy, but never at Bass Pro or Cabelas.
