Putting siding on a metal building
Posted by snake2985 on 9/8/16 at 8:53 am00
I need to put siding, probably hardi board, on the front of my metal building in order to satisfy my HOA. Does anyone have any experience doing this. It is 30' across, 14 ' high in the middle and has 2 10x10 roll up doors and an entry door on the side I need to cover. Can I simply screw the boards into the metal siding, do I need to pull the metal off and add plywood. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
How close are the "highs" on the existing R panel?
I would try to get away with screwing to the sheeting if the ribs are close. You'll probably have to get rid of any stitch screws that are on the highs between exiting R panels.
If they are within 16" I would go for it with no sheathing. You will have to caulk, putty, and paint the Hardi plank siding wall after the fact to prevent water intrusion and leaks/rust on those penetrations in the future.
You may have to get the metal building company to make some custom eave and corner flashing to lap over the siding at the corner at the roof.

Hardi Board is some brittle stuff and will break if you look at it wrong if not applied over a solid backing material. I wouldn't apply it over metal siding with or without furring strips. If your going to use Hardi Board take off the metal siding and install OSB or Plywood first.

Best answer. Just reframe with treated lumber at the ground.
