If you could leave tomorrow to make a duck hunting trip to any public land in any state where would it be?

Mine would be Otter Slough Conservation Area in Southeast Missouri. I've heard it's duck hunting heaven but it's damn near impossible to draw a blind there.

Otter Slough isn't that hard to get in. On the weekends, you have to be lucky. But on weekdays, you can usually get into a blind, and almost always a wade-in area.

I own a business in MO. And it's on my way back and forth. I usually drive until about midnight, then sleep in my truck until 4 am. Then, I grab some breakfast and head in for the 4:30 drawing. I go for the wade-in areas.

I hunt by myself and usually have a limit, or close to it by sunrise. Regardless, I'm back in my truck and rolling down the road by 7:30 am. It's a surgical strike kind of place.

The best DIY hunting experience in North America. You can hunt anywhere unless it's posted. And most places aren't posted. Ducks are really, really, really stupid this time of year. I cannot emphasize this enough. Dumb as rocks. Almost makes you cry for the way they behave down here in Jan when they won't look at a decoy.

ETA: The ducks don't get their plumage until about the middle/end of October. By the middle of Nov you can be frozen out. Focus on the south end of Sask around late October if you want plumage. If you shoot them in late Sept, early Oct, every duck you kill will look like a Grey Duck Hen.

The place we deer hunt in Southern IL is public land and there's a big section of waterfowl rest area.

I have never seen more ducks and geese. It's amazing.

Looking at their website they've had wade in vacancies for the last week and a couple blind vacancies

I'd go with Sask. during the fall or South Dakota in the spring though

Yes, I agree with Polar. Wade in spots are available or you'll need a boat to handle the shallow marsh. I was out there in November and we'll be going back the week before Thanksgiving next season.

I loved my week long trip to Saskatchewan. Felt like you had the entire Province to yourself. Never ran into any other duck hunting parties in the field. People were very nice, giving us permission to hunt their fields and ponds.

Lastly, I'd like to go back to Stuttgart and stand in Bayou Meto's flooded timber. Weekend hunting pressure was unreal but I had some friends who knew where nice holes were located. That's one of the places where you have to promise not to go back into where you were taken, tell the braggarts to STFU and you put all the ducks in the bottom of the boat before you get back to the ramp.

FatNeck's blind over on Catahoula. Get there early. It's public, and don't let him try to bully you about it. If you oversleep, just pull in near his blind whenever you get there.

Has anyone ever hunted Lacassine NWR? That place has got to be loaded with birds every year.
