My brother and I are gonna start construction on a hunting camp as soon as deer season ends in hopes to have it ready for turkey season. Will just be an insulated shipping container with some lights, window unit and a TV. Running power is out of our budget so I need to purchase a generator. Any OBers have a setup similar to this? I've never dealt with a propane generator before, would any of you recommend one over gas and why? Would 5500 be enough to run what I have described? Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks Guys!!!

gas sits in the carb and goes bad. Propane or NG does not. You will never have a carburetor problem with them.9/10 issues with gas powered gensets is the carb.

i converted my EU3000 to propane (actually dual-fuel, ut will run on either). happy with it but it wont run on eco-throttle while on propane

what else will be on propane at your camp? hot water? stove?

Nah just what I listed in the first post. The "camp" is really just gonna consist of the shipping container for sleeping, so window unit and some lights in there. Next to an elevated deck with fireplace and grille where most of the time will be spent, will only need to power some outdoor lighting and tv there. Going to be pretty rustic

5500 should be more than enough to run what you're wanting. I'd even go as small as I could to save on fuel in the long run, but I'm a cheap arse.

That was my initial thought, but I think I'm gonna go with a 5500 in case I wanna run more stuff down the line.

It's probably gonna get stolen if you leave it there. Get a gas 5500 and take it home or bring it inside when you leave. You can find a brand new one for $300

I would pick up a Champion 1400/1800 watt generator next time they go on sale at Tractor Supply for $149 to supplement your 5500. The 1400 will run 10 hours at 50% load on 1 1/2 gallons of gas and will power a small window a/c, tv, etc. The gas savings running the small generator will pay for itself. Also has a 2 year warranty so you could run the shite out of it.

I have been thru this before and after buying a few cheap gas generators every 2 years I finally decided to make the move to diesel. Most run slower 1800 rpm vs. 3600, so they are built for the long haul. For the last 4 years no problems .

I would go with a solar panel, 12V lighting with battery back up. From there, a gas genset in the 5500W will take care of a 110V AC 5000BTU, TV and if you want a dish. Also, you could put a battery charger to help charge the lights.

I have a Honda EU6500is with 800 hours on it. I've never had a single problem with it. On the last fill up I pour stabil storage in it to try and give the carb a longer expected life. So far so good. It is the quietest generator I've ever been around. I know people that have the onan that are going to get mine because of how quiet it is. Eco mode puts a lot less wear and tear on the engine.
