I am in need of some OB wisdom. I am going to put a propane generator at my deer camp. I plan on putting a 100 gallon tank out there so I don't have to worry about having it refilled multiple times throughout the season. My question is it better to rent the tank through whichever gas company I use? Or just buy my own? And what are some of the pros and cons of each. Thanks

What is the cost to rent vs purchase? What are the routine inspections that need to be done? How long to tanks last? Does the company you rent from pay for all maintenance?

They should be good for 12 years from manufacture date. From then on out, you must have them recertified every 5 years. I get mine recertified at LaSalle Gas in New Iberia. It's just a visual inspection.

In my opinion, it's worth it to just buy the thing. They're only a little over a 100 bucks.

Then call the propane companies and get the answers!

Are you waiting for Wickowick to make the calls for you?

In Florida I had a large tank for the house, either 500 or 700 gallons. The rental was peanuts, about $8 a month.

Keep in mind that if you own the tank you can shop around for the best price on propane. We have an underground tank on our farm that has been there for 40 years. On that small of a tank though it might just be easier to rent it. The delivery fee is what gets you on small tanks.

100 gallons wont last you very long on a generator. You'll burn about 6-8 gallons a day.

Pretty much all it will be running is a small window unit and or space heater, TV and lights. Even so, would you recommend looking into a bigger tank?

Joking aside, I would just talk to whoever is going to service it and see what the difference will be in cost and in service on buying vs renting. It shouldn't be a tough decision once you talk to the actual provider for that location.

As someone mentioned, the delivery fees alone make it worthwhile to get a larger tank. A 100 gallon is really small, and to my knowledge, propane does not go bad.

Yeah, but you can buy 2 100 gallon cylinders and just swap them out when one is running low.

That's what I would do.
