Problem Spooling Spinning Reel - Need OB Help

I just loaded some 12# Berkeley onto my spinning reel. I thought I did it correctly but I just went out to the yard to cast it, and when I cast, I am getting a lot of backlash and twists. Is this because I spooled it wrong or is there not enough weight? I have a 3/0 EWG, 1/4 split shot weight, and worm. Someone help.

I would say you spooled it too loosely.

you might have wound it too tight....also if you are retrieving in the yard maybe it isn't putting as much tension on the line as if it was in the water?

I don't understand, I held the line near the base and spooled slowly.

Could it be the direction the line spooled off? It came off clockwise and onto the reel the same way..

I had it backwards.

How to spool a line and keep the line from twisting.

You need to have tension on the the spool holding the line.

Yeah and I always reversed the roll of line every 25 revs, meaning if it was coming off the top I'd make it come from below.
Good luck, baitcasters are so easy.

I've never got 12 lb mono or Flouro to work well on my spinning rigs. I usually have to go to braid/splice/flouro or stay below 8lbs...

That's all I used, seemed to help rotating the spool though. My problem was that the reels didn't hold up, I used them for everything. 1500's by the way.

Spray some silicone on spool. When you leave dock, drop about half your line behind boat while running and give it a minute or two. Retreive and this should eliminate alot of the twists. Manually flipping bail after cast helps out too.

sounds like you twisted the line when you spooled it

Spooled it wrong.

Was your reel on the rod when you spooled it up or off?

Pay attention to the line when spooling and make sure it isn't looping as it comes off the spool if it is then flip the spool over. Also, like others have said make sure you put some tension on the line as you spool up.

It seems like a lot of people here don't even understand what you're saying. You figured it out though.

agreed. There is a certain way to pull the line off a spool when you put line on a spinning reel. The OP just pulled it off the wrong way. Common mistake

Yep. Usually, after 10-20 handle turns, I'll add some slack to see if the line twists or falls in nice, loose coils. If it twists, I flip the spool over. No problems.

When you spool a spinning rod lay the spool flat on the ground where the line uncoils the same direction as it goes back onto the spinning reel. If you do that there won't be any twist.

Also, always manually flip the bail. If you are using a bait like an in-line spinner or similar, invest in some good swivels.

There is some good advice but first what size reel do you have? You may be putting to heavy a line on it. Rule is. If your reel turns clockwise as you look at it make sure the line is coming off the spool counterclockwise laying flat on the floor. Works every time. Letting it out behind the boat with nothing on it will definitely straighten it out though.

It needs to come off of a flat spool counter-clockwise.
