My son is going to hunt the "primitive" firearms season this year, and I am looking for a good rifle for him. He believes a crack barrel will qualify.

Is that right? Recommendations?

SIAP. I did search.

Single shoot crack barrels over .35 caliber are "primitive" in Louisiana. I have a TC Encore Pro Hunter in .35 Whelen. It's a badarse round.

H&R in 45-70 is pretty much the standard. I would go 444 though.

Forgot you can go 35 Whelen. I would do that. But unlike civiltiger, I would kill something with it

I bought a crack barrel 44 mag from Puglia's several years ago and it is a sweet little gun. Quit using it now that I hunt in AR.

Also has to have an external hammer.

This is the reason why Browning High walls can be used, and why Ruger #1's can't.

This is the ticket. The Encore would be a good choice.

You could also get a single-shot 12ga or 20ga with a rifled barrel so long as it has the exposed hammer. Newer rifled slugs are very accurate out to 150yds and if he ever might have to chance to hunt in the NE or on an AFB, a rifled shot-gun could gun in super handy.

how old is he? I think if he's under 16 he doesn't need a primitive rifle. I bought an H&R Handi .444 off Bayoushooter.com last year for $150. Great rifle.

It is open to all weapons now except for the early Does only season. It is still primitive only.

check regs and depending on age he may be able to hunt with whatever rifle he wants to use. if I recall correctly Hunt jr used to use his 7mm-08 during that time (assuming you are in Louisiana)
