Preparedness planning for a home invasion

I'm new to having a weapon for home defense and have a few questions.
Do you keep your home defense weapon or weapons fully loaded with a chambered round and safety off, or do you keep the magazine separate from the gun and have to get them together quickly or something entirely different? Do you lock your guns up when you are not at home? How about a revolver?
I'm trying to think about the balance between safety all around and the need to be ready quickly in case of emergency, and wanted the OB opinion.

No kids at home.
.45 in nightstand, fully loaded, chambered round, safety on. All other weapons locked in safe.

I keep all pistols loaded with safety off and shotgun behind the bed loaded with safety off as well. AR's, etc arent loaded but mags are. No kids in the house.

if you have a pump Shotgun, leave it unchambered so you can scare the intruder when you pump it

I don't see any advantage of having the safety off of your home defense weapon.
I keep mine holstered by the bed in condition 1. Shotguns in the closet with a trigger lock, loaded tube.

Kid is almost 18 with his own gun cabinet all of my guns loaded with safety ON. One handgun, it's a revolver in holster in nightstand hammer on empty cylinder.

Bad idea.
I have kids at home, so I don't leave things loaded (a round in the chamber) unless they are in a safe.
Every "home defense" gun has a loaded magazine, tube, etc, so that they could be ready to go quickly. Don't know what I will do when my children become old enough to rack a slide.

If your weapon is a pistol, I would keep the chamber loaded, safety on (if applicable), in a quick-access pistol safe (like GunVault).
I can see the arguments for wanting it to be more accessible than that.

I have kids but they are well trained. I keep a couple of pistols loaded with none in the chamber as well as a rifle and combat shotgun.

Loaded to the max with safetys on. No kids in house but when we have company the are put in safe

I have a shotgun in the bedroom behind the headboard in a scabbard.
I have several pistols around the house in high places and out of site...I figure if someone wants to try and kick my door in at 7:00 at night I have a better chance of getting to one of pistols than to my shotgun in the bedroom.
All weapons are stored ready to go

young kids at home.

Me too. I have 3 small kids and I figure this is a good option. I have one within 5 ft of my bed I can get to at night very quickly, another in the kitchen my wife could get to if she were to need it while she's in there cooking or cleaning, one in the hall bathroom on top of a cabinet in case I'm dropping a deuce and hear someone break in, and one in a cabinet in the living room between some books. I figure a safe place to hide something from kids is near books, since most kids seem to think they are allergic to them.
All ready to rock and roll if needed.

Same here. Mine isn't in reach of my kids either.

This probably goes without saying, but you should also do everything in your power to prevent someone from getting into your home at all. I've used the door security bars for years. I'd much rather seem paranoid than have someone kick in my door easily.

I don't have small children at home either, so I worry less about issues like that. I have also thought about having guns strategically placed around the house in case I need to get to one and I'm not close to the bedroom, like in my basement.
I bought a safe and was thinking I should lock them up when no one is home, just in case of a home invasion they wouldn't get stolen. It seems like a lot of work each morning to lock them up and get them back out, but I would hate to lose them, or possibly have one of my firearms stolen and used to hurt someone.

Sometimes I put mine away before going to bed sometimes I don't...
In my first lines of defense I also have dogs and an alarm system.
My dogs let me know before the person ever gets to the front door that someone is coming.
Its all about what you feel comfortable with for you and your family.

I like the way you think. You know what else you can do? Get a holster and carry everywhere.
