OK, so the wife is interviewing for residencies currently and we will be compiling a rank list in the not-to-distant future. Of the following options, how would you rank them in terms of outdoor opportunities? I am willing to pursue whatever is available in the area and enjoy pretty much all forms of hunting and fishing but don't hike/camp much if that makes a difference. If you don't want to rank all of them, maybe just your top 5?

Gainesville, FL
Augusta, GA
Houston
Oklahoma City
Atlanta
Birmingham
Durham, NC
Richmond, VA
Memphis
Shreveport
Little Rock
Washington DC
Rochester, MN
Los Angelos
Cinncinatti
Dallas

Clearly, this won't be a huge factor in where we end up ranking programs, but I like to know all the advantages/disadvantages before deciding among options...

My top five (in no particular order) would be Gainesville, Birmingham, Houston, Dallas and Richmond.

I'd have to go with Little Rock, from a purely outdoor perspective. Pretty close to some of the best duck hunting in the country and you don't have to drive very far to be in the middle of nowhere. I would think it would be difficult to find a decent place to hunt near one of those really big cities.

Little Rock

+/- 1 hour away from public timber duck hunting and deer hunting in the bottoms of the White River.

Oklahoma city, little rock, memphis and Dallas are only ones with duck hunting so that's my answer.

Dallas

The red river area outside of dallas has some good deer hunting and the central flyway is switching west so there is good duck hunting. Then you are driving distance to lake fork and lake sam rayburn which both are both top notch bass fisheries.

Good point. No ducks around DC, Houston or up in MN?

And is Little Rock that good for duck hunting if EVERYONE there duck hunts?

There are plenty of duck hunting opportunities around Houston. You are also closer to better deer hunting and the coast than Dallas.

Thats the only downfall. Public land problems X 1000 around there.

Got to say Houston even though it gets a bad rap for being a real shite hole for living in and fighting traffic, but not for outdoor stuff. Duck hunting is off the hook if you find the right place and the salt is right here close for inshore and offshore. Plus, the deer hunting if you can afford it and not afraid of a little drive.

Well I live in Memphis so I am a little biased.

From Memphis, you are 6hrs to the coast
3 hours to some of the best trout fishing in the world
1.5 hrs to the TN river and smallmouth
You're actually closer to some of the best duck hunting from Memphis than from Little Rock and you have MS duck hunting as well.

Deer hunting everywhere
Turkey hunting everywhere

Houston
Little Rock
Dallas
Atlanta
Richmond, VA (just love the area)

In no particular order. NOT a big fan of Houston area.

I would rank Memphis a close 2nd to Houston if you are duck hunter. Maybe more so since you have Arkie close by and the Sip is taking it up strong now with their duck hunting. The only thing that I would lean Houston is better access to the salt and ease of going back to LA for more fishing and hunting ops.
