Planning on getting a fiberglass pool installed soon. Anyone have experience with local pool companies like Bay or Central? Any advice on additions, pump, salt/chlorine etc.?

Casey Klein in Denham Springs. (225)329-9502 He did my parent's pool. He does great work in a timely manner, and will even do monthly cleaning and service on the pool after install for a fee. Great guy I have recommended him for at least 4 or 5 pools and I have never had anyone say anything bad about him.

Yep we did fiberglass which is a very quick install time. 2 to 3 weeks from first ground break to swim.
Only thing diff, add the hot tub option that pours into the pool. This will warm the water and increase the amount of time you can swim. Still havnt been in mine yet, to cold

Been seriously thinking about doing putting in a pool myself. How much do the fiberglass pools run?

This is info from Bay.

The average 14x30 in ground pools:
Vinyl $22,000
Fiberglass $34,000
Concrete (Gunite or Shotcrete) $36,000

As a pool builder in Houston, I would highly recommend avoiding salt. Salt is extremely hard on materials and will rust anything metal in your backyard. Look into a ozone/nature2 system. Will run about 1parts per million on chlorine. Easiest to maintain and best system available. I would recommend the Zodiac Jandy brand.

I don't think that's true in my experience, albeit apparently more limited than yours. Have had a SW system for a year now and have seen none of the issues you mention.

It will happen. Not trying to be negative. We build over 100 pools a year. Hopefully you get a few more years before the problems start.

Some friends of mine are installing a pool by digging a large trench, dropping in a shipping container, and then they will put a custom liner in the shipping container. Sounded crazy at first but they are about to lower the container in and it will look like a fancy narrow lap pool in about two more weeks.

Can you tell me anything about Gunite deteriorating? I've got some white powdery stuff at the bottom of my pool and was told at the pool store that it's most likely the Gunite deteriorating

I've had a salt water pool in my backyard since 2007, and nothing in my backyard has rusted.

But to the OP, know this, a salt system creates chlorine. It's not an either/or situation.
