Pheasant in Louisiana?

I'm doing some work in the middle of Tangipahoa parish, not TOO far from covey rise and I keep hearing what I think are pheasants down the hill from where I'm working. I've never known of a population of wild pheasant in this area. Does covey rise have those, maybe some escapees? I think wickowick is board upland bird guru? What do you think?

Yes covey rise has them. They have a tower they throw them out of, and some get away.

"Those are pen raised birds you're hearing. They aren't even close to wild. You shouldn't even be doing work in the general proximity of those birds, as the entire area isn't worth the ground they shite on. They don't fly like wild birds. Your job will fail. Those birds will die. May God have mercy on your soul." -Wickowick.

But they are fun to shoot
They also will put them out in the quail fields in addition to the towers, so they could be pretty spread out
It ain't hunting but it is a fun way to spend the afternoon

We had a lease member who was known for being a big drunk and story teller years ago.
We showed up to duck hunt one morning and he started telling us he killed a pheasant the day before. We told him how full of shite he was and that it was most likely a full plummage pigeon (you know how they'll get a green head).
After the hunt, I'll be damned we went to his camp and he pulled a mysterious brown paper grocery bag out of the freezer. We all were in this moment of disbelief/what the frick is this crazy arse dude going to show us.
Out of the bag he pulled the most beautiful ring necked pheasant cock I've ever seen.
We asked around and nobody in the area knew of anyone raising penned birds.
The kill story went that he was driving to his camp with corn fields on either side and he saw it cross the road. He grabbed his shotgun and steel shot, walked out into the field about 50 yards and kicked it up and killed him.
To this day no one knows where it came from. This was in Red River Parish fwiw.

I've seen them in north west St Tammany parish near covey rise. I live there. I assumed it was escapees from covey rise.

PHEASANTS
Population Status
Several attempts have been made by the Department to establish ring-necked pheasant populations in southwest Louisiana. In the 1960s, pen-reared pheasant releases were unsuccessful. In the late 1970s, wild-trapped pheasants from Texas were released. These also did not result in viable populations. In the early 1980s, wild-trapped pheasants from California were released and thrived, at least for a while. The population has expanded sufficiently to allow a hunting season in a portion of southwest Louisiana. But, because of the limited area and lack of access, hunter participation was very light.
Pheasant season was closed following several consecutive low population counts. Many newly released species experience rapid expansion followed by declines. It is not currently known if this is the phenomena observed on our pheasants or simply the result of several bad nesting seasons due to weather extremes--drought and flooding.

Pheasant get wilder, faster than the other game birds and they have a pretty good survival instinct. I think the issue with them reproducing in Louisiana had to do with the minerals in the soil that resulted in poor hatchings in SWLA. I saw, what I assume, was a wild cock near Kinder in 2006 on the side of the road near the train tracks. He hauled arse as soon as I stopped the car.
