I've never had an AR, and don't know much about them. Is this a good deal? Sounds too cheap not to buy.

Is it magpul stock/PSA classic LPK or that cheap Blackhawk/PTAC crap?

Ok, so the furniture is more important than the moving parts? Just advise him to get the coolest looking rifle, and he'll be good to go.
To answer the OP, yes that is a good deal. PSA has provided consistent quality. Not only have I ran their system through rain annd dirt, but there have been high volume retailers who have put it through much worse on full auto.
OP, I was in your shoes just a few short years ago. I highly advise you to just research parts, catch good deals, and watch YouTube videos on how to build one on your own. Im far from being mechanically inclined, but if you have 6 hours of your time you'll save time and money, and get exactly what you want.

The PSA classic LPK is the moving parts I am asking him to make sure it is...which if you read my post, you would understand that. Not sure I understand your uneducated attempt at sarcasm or even if I am understanding your point. It appears we agree.

What the frick is wrong with a cool looking rifle?

Nice buy. Just chunk the pos furniture and get a CTR or a Rogers SuperStock and throw a Magpul grip on it

If I were to pair a cheap, but decent, upper with this lower. What would you advise brand-wise, and in barrel length, for someone who hasn't spent a ton of time shooting ARs?
Not sure if it helps the answer on the barrel length. But I tend to be a tad unsteady, at least for my tastes, with a rifle from a standing position. So I normally cradle mid elbow. It has seemed to help with accuracy so far.

I'm about to pull the trigger on a blemished psa lower for 60

I want to say Jims had the MAG tactical lowers for $50. They are light as hell.

TigerTatorTots,
Like the Op, I'm a novice also. I'm also thinking about trying to build my own AR. When you say, "cheap Blackhawk/PTAC crap", can you qualify that for me? Are you saying there's something about it that will make it not go bang, is it the looks, or that it won't hold up over time? I'm not wanting to invest a lot of money just to look good. I also won't be putting 10,000 rounds through a gun. I would just like to have one to play a little and for some cheap insurance sitting in the closet. Now if one won't go bang every 10 rounds or so, then that would be a deal breaker. But if it's 99% reliable, I'm all about cheap. Please advise.

with the shitty stocks that come with most entry level guns, the controls are horrid, the cheek weld is usually unfavorable, and there is a lot of play (wiggle).
with upgraded stocks, you have good controls, a lot of fitment options for cheek weld, and a friction lock to eliminate any movement. you can also have things like battery compartments, QD attachment points, etc if you so choose
this is what comes on most entry level rifles
this is the Rogers Superstock (it and the Magpul CTR are my favorites)
if you want something with even better cheek weld (and battery compartments, go with a SOPMOD style. bulkier and heavier, but more comfortable
got a bunch at the store if you wanna check some out

quote:Two reasons I do not like the Blackhawk/PTAC line. It is PSA's budget line of products that A) feel very cheap in your hand and B) a lot of wiggle-not mil-spec and not as high quality control. You may get a rifle that lasts 20,000 rounds, not saying it isn't possible. However, you have a higher chance of getting something that breaks down quickly or just doesn't function up to par right out the gate. The price isn't THAT much different to just go with a M&P 15 Sporter, PSA Classic, or lower end DPMS.

Psa complete been lower and magpul stock and grip for 159 the other day. Good deal
Lower parts kits can be bought all over with brand name of choice. Pick up better if you think it is necessary and keeep the psa as a spare backup parts kit
Branding is a major part in the AR business

Buy now before the craze starts again.
Time to horde magazines, ammo, and lowers.
I've got a truck and boat I'm looking at. Lol.
