I'm putting a new 3/16 plate deck on a pontoon boat
I'm reading that the preferred prep method before primer and non skid paint is to acid etch it
how exactly do I do that and what do I use?

Either use self etching primer or sand it with some 80 grit. No need for acid.

I was not aware self etching primer was a thing
is this the same as zinc chromate or something different?

I've always hit it with a sander then used aluminum bright before painting.

trying to avoid the sander so I don't have to deal with tack ragging, etc
I had thought about vinegar...I assume it works?
vinegar plus zinc chromate would be cheap and easy
I'm planning on applying durabak

I have been wanting to repaint my xpress boat. I was told that the paint i would have to use wouldn't work with your normal paint gun. Anyone ever painted their aluminum boat? Sorry for the hijack.

yes it's cut and waiting for me to pick it up
only way I can get it home is on the deck of the boat but I have about another week of work to do
it's a 23' sheet

I know a guy that sells aluminum to all the boat builders along the coast. Pretty sure he is on TD also.

If any old paint or residue present remove
Wipe down throughly with xylene
Apply etching coat
Then apply finish of choice

Remember coating of choice lasting duration is dependent on prep work
