Painting contractor rates

What's the going rate for decent painters these days? Its a little time for some updating.

I have had several things painted in the last 3 years. Each time it was done by the job, so it was necessary for the contractor to make a visit and give me a quote.
Often the prep can be 2/3 of the job so they need lay their eyes on it to know how much to charge.

probably going to be close to $3-4 sq.ft.
