So i absolutely have to install a sprinkler system this year, and i've pretty much mapped out my rotors, lines, and whatnot.

On the side of my house, by the water source i'm going to be using, is an plug on an exterior wall (uncovered). I was hoping to get an outdoor timer with a 120 plug and just keep it plugged it all of the time. I've never used this plug before, so i obviously dont mind it being occupied.

Is constant use safe for an uncovered plug like that? I'm worried about rain and dirt getting into the outlet itself. OR do i need to find a way to hard wire it inside the house?

thanks

I would put it inside the garage, if possible. Just seems safer all-around.

By timer, do you mean irrigation timer, or just a simple on/off timer? How many stations will your sprinkler system have? Will you not have different stations for flower-beds vs. grass? You can get an 8 station timer fairly cheaply these days -- I would think you'll want that secure inside.

They make covers for outdoor outlets. IIRC, they are like $10

Yeah it's going to be irrigation timer with 5 different stations. I would rather it be in the garage, but then have to run the wires through the brick wall, and under a sidewalk. I can do that, but the location im thinking of is MUCH more convenient from an install perspective. And i'm lazy.

Definitely put the extra work in and install inside.

Get a masonry bit and go thru the bricks, install timer in the garage.

Tens of millions of people have sprinkler systems running off of exterior outlets. They have a spot on the bottom of the cover for the cord to fit in

Needs a Taymac "In use" cover if he wants to use it while the cover is closed.

We install outdoor controllers outside all the time with no problems. I install outdoor models in garages too. I have replaced a ton of indoor controllers because of water damage, etc

I always love it when they're blown off the wall of the garage thanks to lightning.
Valve wires running around the PVC in the ground does a number on the pipes, too.

Why would you not use a zone timer in your garage?

Say lightning strikes a tree and travels through a root across your irrigation pipes WITH the valve wires in it with the pvc pipes. It enters the wire and travels to the end, which is your timer. It will blow that timer to smithereens, and as its traveling, everywhere it touches a pvc pipe, it slices it like a laser.
Also, if the wires go up the drywall of your garage to the back of your timer, it will slice the drywall too
Lightning is crazy, man.
