I don't know if this has been discussed in the past (probably has) but I was just wondering what the demographics on the OB are.

What I mean is like age range, what states you guys/gals live in. How did you start hunting, etc...

I'm 35 and am from and live in Alabama. My first hunting trip was when I was 13 when I killed my first deer. My grandfather to me was unreal with his knowledge, passion, and skill with hunting/fishing.

He took all of his grandsons hunting but wouldn't do it until we were 13 and he felt as though we would be able to react smart if a bad situation occured. He would start you out sitting in the shooting house or ladder stand with him and once he felt you had learned enough he would turn you loose and let you hunt on your own.

With his help and guidance I killed 7 doe and 1 buck (basket 7 point) from the age of 13-18. As I got to age 18 and a little older I started to get out of deer hunting mostly because he started to have health issues and couldn't go as much. When he was finally diagnosed with dementia I was around 25 and had been away from hunting for about 5 years and had lost the desire.

I instead found a new passion in duck hunting when my best friend invited me and I've been doing that exclusively ever since.

When my grandfather passed away 7 going on 8 years ago on Father's Day, I didn't think that I would ever deer hunt again mainly because that was something that he and I did together and I didn't think it would feel right again. But, I had the chance to go again for the first time in 15 years this past Saturday and as I was sitting in the shooting house I was reminded of all those years and experiences that I had with him. I found myself laughing at one point thinking of him and asking for his help one more time but this time he wasn't there to give me an answer.

So I have thought about it some more this week and with another hunting trip planned this weekend with my friends I feel like I've been doing his memory an injustice. Instead of not doing it because it was something we did together, I should be doing it because it's how I was raised and it's why he did it all in the first place. I feel like he did it because it brought him closer to his children and grandchildren and it was an opportunity to share his passion and knowledge with us and to teach us respect for firearms and a respect for nature and God's creation.

I miss those days and times hunting with him but I feel like I need to get back into it because it is an experience like no other. There is nothing like waking up before dawn and walking out in the woods and watching and hearing the woods wake up. I can't relive those memories except in my mind but I can apply what he taught me and I can teach it to my children one day when that time comes.

Wow! Sorry to get sappy on you guys but I guess I've just been thinking a lot this week.

So what are some experiences with your dads and granddads?

30. Born and raised in Mississippi. There really isn't much of an explanation needed when you're from around here.

32 years old. Born and raised in Covington County Alabama. Started deer hunting with dogs with my dad when I was really young. Lucky to be with my grandfather when he killed a 165 class 12 point. Doubt I'll ever see a deer that big in the wild again but I will always remember that day!

Lived all over the place, call Louisiana home

My dad started taking me to the deer camp when I was about 7 or 8 probably. Never killed anything out there but had a good time, he killed a huge 8 point one year. We used to squirrel hunt a lot as well up by Alexandria and we had a duck camp at pecan island. He's a much bigger bass fisherman than hunter. These days he doesnt hunt at all unless he gets invited on a dove hunt, but I still get in the woods as often as I can for deer, which is about all I hunt now.

eta: killed my first deer when I was 13, got two that year, then took a long break from hunting and have killed one each of the last two years, running out of time for this year.

33 (soon to be 34), live in BR but originally from NELA aka God's country. Never really have been a big hunter but I started plinking with my dad as a little kid. I have killed way more paper and milk jugs than anything else.

TL;DR

for real though..

26, born and raised in Denham Springs. Have always hunted and fished with my dad growing up. Got away from the fishing the last 5 years or so though and hunt only. Killed my first deer at 10 years old, still rememebr telling my dad to push against my shoulder because I was scared of the recoil. Still have the gun in my gun cabinet today. This was one of the first years I did most of everything myself. Makes me appreciate all the work he put in teaching me everything.

SLA
Dad was in poor health most of my childhood but taught me what he knew about hunting and fishing. Did everything he could to encourage me hunting and took me fishing as much as he was able to. My neighbors started me out deer hunting. After a few years, finally got a 4 pt at 13 on the first hunt with the new 06 (spit) my old man got me.

Didn't appreciate everything my old man did or tried to do for me until I got a little older. Would do anything to get him back and go fishing with him

Born in NOLA, raised in the REAL God's Country (Chalmette, brah!)
Grew up fishing, camping & shooting with my Dad. Only got to make a few hunts before he passed away in 91 when I was only 14. He loved the outdoors. Shooting & fishing more than hunting but he occasionally went. Mostly small game. My first kill was a rabbit when I was 12. 20ga SKB side-by-side.

Never really got to do hunting in my own after he passed. Losing all his guns to Katrina also put a big hurt on my hunting chances as I no longer have any rifles or shotguns.

But I still love fishing and shooting and as my sons grow older I'll be sure to pass that down to them also.

I was born and raised in BR by an Arkansas father and a Plaquemine mother. My mom was pretty much a city girl through and through but her parents grew up in Donaldsonville and Sunshine. Unfortunately both grandfathers passed in 2013.

My grandpa on my mom's side I had never hunted with. But he taught me about the outdoors and loved growing vegetables and fruit in his garden. That man could grow some incredible stuff. He also taught me how to ride a bike and how to live a laid back life. The quote pawpaw lived by: "ain't no damn use," meaning don't let the small stuff bring you down. to pawpaw

My grandpa on my dad's side, papaw, grew up in a small town in Arkansas. He grew up on a farm and had his own farm his whole life. The farm still exists but obviously he isn't around to care for it anymore. One of my most vivid memories is going turkey hunt with him. I was young and restless and moved constantly but made sure to tell me grandpa, "tell me when to freeze," if we were to see something. I still hunt on that farm and took a doe on it in November. I thank papaw for being there in spirit with me in his woods.

My dad was the main one who took me hunting. I killed my first deer at 13 years old in St. Francisville. Our camp was directly behind the Kpax (sp?) plant. He taught me how to shoot, how to be responsible, and how to respect nature. I don't hunt with him as much now since I've become more of a shooter than a hunter. But I still enjoy going a few times a year with my dad.

As for me, I'm 24 now and am a huge 2nd Amendment advocate. Obviously you all know that I got certified as a handgun instructor last February (has it really been a year!?). I have only taught a hand full of classes but try to spread real, useful information through this forum, by word of mouth, and through my YouTube page. There is way too much bad information out there regarding the types of people that own firearms. I am trying my best to change that.

The general mindset gun owners have is a unique one - being self reliant, questioning everything, double checking for yourself, being responsible around others, etc. It's crazy how simply owning a firearm teaches you these things.

I originally joined this board a couple of summers ago when I saw someone post a firearms question. I just decided to commit myself to the board and establish myself here. I have come to meet a few OB'ers and enjoy talking to you guys daily. This definitely is the best board out there.

I remember shooting my grandad's 30-06 when I killed my first deer. My granddad laughed when I got home and told my parents that when the smoke cleared the deer was down. I think he got more excited about us killing a deer than he did when it was him killing one.

You would have thought he had won a million dollars when I killed my first buck. Heck I was excited myself but I think he definitely was more excited.

He had a nice 10 point that hung on the wall my whole life that he killed back in the 70s that would have probably scored around 135-140 and I almost ended up with it a couple months ago before we sold their house. I wanted to give everyone an opportunity to take it if they wanted it and one of my cousins took it and is going to have a new cape put on it. I'll be interested to see what the rack looks like on a modern mount. I've never seen one in person that was as close to being 100% perfect on both sides.
