Would you do this trip again, or try somewhere else next time?

We plan on hunting this exact same range next year. I feel we have a decent advantage now in knowing what to expect, and we really only saw a limited portion of it being as that is was only 2.5 days and only about 4 miles in. We may bring 4 people next year and obviously go with multiple tags and be more selective and strictly bull hunt considering we'll have the man power to pack out a bull or two if needed. We went in with the mindset this year that we just wanted to put an elk down, if it was a bull great, but just wanted to succeed. I will have a tag next year and I would be willing to eat it to wait for a bull shot opportunity. The only reason I think we would consider somewhere else would be seeing another state and having a fresh challenge.

Amazing trip! I can't add much but the original Sawyer Squeeze is a lot faster than the Sawyer mini when it comes to filtering water.

I'm back in full swing planning one of these after reading this thread.

You mind answering a few questions non-public?

I'm no OB regular by any means but I stick my head in here from time to time for tips, info, etc. So glad I peeked in here today because this has been by far the best thing I've probably read on the entire site, not just the OB.

Oh, and

You can barely see me, but Im in here. This was one giant Evergreen.

There were aspen's laying all over the ground everywhere you looked. You could hear them falling at night.

I cant blame him for taking the sure shot though

The first time that I went out west with a bow one of the guides told me
" if you get a shot at an elk, whether it be a bull cow or calf, you take it"

Congrats to you and FIL

That's basically the same approach we had. Kill elk, progress and learn from it

Pretty incredible scenery out there. That picture was actually taken with the window rolled down going 50 mph. If you look at the wildflowers on side of the road, theyre distorted.

the satisfaction of doing it on our own
Same here. I've hunted CO 4 times south of Pagosa Springs (San Juan National Forest), 3 times rifle and 1 muzzle loader. Self guided public land is a great challenge, but the satisfaction is worth it.

We brought mules with us from LA and they are a huge help both riding and hauling gear.

I missed a nice bull my first year. I stupidly didn't have a range finder and badly overestimated the distance between myself and the bull. Thought he was around 500 yards away and put my cross hairs about 6" above his shoulder. I was shaking so bad, it was like I had Parkinsons. Didn't consider the downward angle I was shooting at either. Shot right over his back. He took off running and I missed a couple more shots between bushes. Almost turned the gun on myself.

Never ever go elk hunting without a range finder. Distance turned out to be about 280 yards on first shot. Should have never put cross hairs out of fur.

Ended up killing a smaller bull in the exact same spot 2 years later at 390 yards. Had a rangefinder and knew my ballistics, dropped him in his tracks.

Can't wait go back. Haven't been since '08.
