It comes to this... Find a parent case. The smaller the bb the faster and flatter it will fly. It doesn't make a ton of sense to get a smaller faster bb if you don't need the added range of the round.

makes sense, seemed liked there are a little more choices in bullet weight in the 280, not sure though. I'll check it out a little more, thanks

ballistics seem to similar between the two, thught maybe the 280 may provide a little more flexibility

If you ever get into handloading, or have friends that do it, the choices are absolutely endless for 30-06. There are about a billion different .308" diameter bullets on the market. You can shoot from a 50gr bullet all the way to a 250gr bullet (It could even be wider than that).

If you want a common, proven, all-around cartridge, 30-06 is your one. If you like the 30-06 parent case, 270 is as far as I would stray from the original.

I've always shot an 06 and never had a complaint and never planned om changing. Got a good deal on a 280 last year so now I'm trying it. Only shot it a few times but love it. May be the gun I love more so than the caliber

280 is going to have as many bullet options to a reloader as the 06. The difference is that those bullets will probably have higher BCs at smaller grain weights, which can relate to better long range accuracy. Smaller, faster, and flatter doesn't always mean better long range performance. 280=7mm in 30-06 case, so the "not straying too far from parent case" is a concern (and I have no idea why that would be a concern) the 280 is technically close then the 270. So, I guess the only real advantage would be availability of factory ammo.

All that being said, I would get a 270 win.

Just get the 280 and then send it to get it reamed to 280 AI. Buy your reloading equipment and enjoy bragging to your buddies that your 280 will outshoot their 7mm rem mags.

It is incredibly difficult to develop an argument against the .30-06, but it's pretty easy to develop one against the .280

agreed,,,, most any little old country store or gas station out in the sticks usually has a box or 2 of 06 stuff.. Might not be your right bullet, or grain, but it will get you by til you get home from your trip..

Yep. Don't really see any advantage of the 280 over the 06 or 270win that would out weigh convenience of factory ammo. If you're like me and carry 50 rounds of every caliber you shoot around in your truck, then it doesn't matter.
