Will be headed over to orange beach on 9/29
for 4 days and wanted to know if anyone has any advice on surf fishing. I have a lot of experience fishing grand isle/fouchon in the surf catching trout and reds. Can you catch trout and reds in the surf there this time of the year? I called J&M tackle and they said you could catch trout and reds on artificial in early
morning and late evening on mirrolures and mirodines. Don’t want to cast a couple hundred times to catch one fish. Any advice?

Find and catch live mole crabs (aka sand fleas) in the surf and put 2 live ones on a double drop rig, put rod in sand spike and open beer.

I'd also bring a big top water and some spoons to throw if you see stuff busting the surface. Normally it's blues, or lady fish but they can be fun to catch.

Prepare to be disappointed in fishing in general as it compares to Louisiana...

If you are going to fist the surf, bring pvc stakes or buy them at the Walmart in OB. Will keep your line above the surf. Mole crabs, dead shrimp, squid, etc on pompano rigs. The keeper size pompano should be moving back in along the surf.

Wade fish Little Lagoon in Gulf Shores. Fish a Green Hornet Matrix shad for trout and redfish and Gulp white Swimming Mullet for flounder.

Park on the road near Compass Point condo and you can easily walk into the lagoon. Just north of the Compass Point swimming pool is a good drop off that consistently produces trout and flounder.

We were in gulf shores last week. Guy was set up about 30 yards from us. He caught a red, a sheephead, and several pompano all in about 50 minutes time. Wasn't exactly wearin em out, but thats a decent haul.

Bama is not Grand Isle/Fourchon. I spent 20 years fishing the Fort Morgan Area, and only caught a few trout and reds in the surf. Neighbor put out a gill net one night and caught a good number of trout, but my bes hauls were on the back side of the peninsula, in the bay.

Usually no end to the number of bluefish and hardtails that you can catch in the surf, along with the occasional spanish mackeral.

Surf fished orange beach in June for first time. Just went out at daylight in front of the condo. I used dead shrimp on a heavy sinker with a pompano rig. Through the week I caught a flounder, a pompano, and about a dozen catfish.

It was slow fishing, but there are worse ways to spend a morning.

I would not plan on catching a single trout in the surf, that's pretty much only a Louisiana and Texas thing. Reds, pompano, etc. certainly.

As said, your best bet is sand fleas or shrimp on a two hook rig. I like to do one of each. Cast one rod short, as long as its 1.5 feet of water that's perfect. Could be 10 yards off the beach. And one rod deep, generally I try to get past the 2nd break. If you really want to try hard, keep a rod with a jig, spoon, or maybe a topwater in case you see a school or fish swim by.

The big mistake people make is casting both rods the same distance. Tons of fish swim real shallow, but they all swim parallel to the beach so have different distances.
