What he means, dickhead, is that the gator is covered in something it's been swimming in and isn't "pigmented" as you so put it.

Way back yonder in high school we used to get drunk riding around in the country and catch armadillos to spray paint and release in town. Caused quite a few laughs when pink and purple or day glow dillos started showing up.
