Will this idea work? Use the same framework as my friend in the text box, but instead of using plain black pvc, I buy the pole mounts show below, but drill an extra hole so I can face the "U" down. Maybe for additional protection I can also slip over a tight rubberband or a strap across the "U" above the reel.

I made some magnetic ones like DownSouthDave for my GMC. They worked awesome on the sides not taking up the area near the cab. I cant take that area up because of carrying kayaks.

Now with my aluminum F150, ive rigged some similarly by spanning the box link attachments with 1x4 and attaching rod holders to it.

Looks like someone is also a fan of the Accurate Fury reel.

At what point do you worry about eye and line damage?

If you have a tool box I used u straps that hook into the bottom lip of my toolbox. Tool box top closes over that then I used 2x4 framing and mounted two four rod holders. I can take it in and out whenever I want and hang it in my garage. My tool box works just the same and t was less than 40 in materials. I will post a picture when I at home. Much sturdier than any pvc setup I was looking at

No toolbox, but I'm probably going to look for a removable one. Seems like a lot to always have back there.

I have the old swimming Pool noodle fitted over a pvc pipe to keep it firm. Then I sliced into the noodle with a blade to press the rods into it. The noodle is fitted along the tailgate when we are ready to head off in the truck with the rods.
