Cottonmouth.

I'm still pissed at my sister a and BIL after I killed one at their house. They jumped on me saying they didn't want any copperheads killed (but that cottonmouths are free game.) I tried telling them that is was a cottonmouth and they both immediately informed me that I didn't know WTH I was talking about.
I mean got-damn, if you are going to tell someone they are wrong, at least be right about it. frickers. It was two against one so I didn't argue much.

I honestly couldn't be specific They are similar but the markings on cottonmouth are more jagged and I think the yellow on the tail is also a sign.

I just know, okay.

ETA: google tells me the yellow on tail occurs on both species. Looks like cottonmouths are usually redder though (like your pic)...Its all in the contours of the markings.

Yeah, from the pics online and Wikipedia, it's definitely a juvi cottonmouth. The yellow tail is the indicator.

yea the markings arent spreadout enough as im seeing on most copperhead pics. and i read that young cottonmouths will be that redish color like coppers head and turn darker as they age.

Dont care dead snake.

They are in the camp that doesn't see it useful to kill every snake that slithers. I am in the number as well but cottonmouths meet the criteria of the hit list. Copperheads are quite a pretty animal and along with their bite being the less of any venomous snake in NA and being very docile I will let them be.

shite, you're right. Both juvi species have a yellow tail. Now I'm not sure. Either way, it's a dead poisonous viper. Good riddance.

It's a cottonmouth, copperhead juvi's have more of a triangle pattern that is spaced further apart.

Sorry, but you can die from a copperhead bite. May not be as common, but I wouldn't chance it. You must not have young kids around your place. If it were here, it would die with the quickness.

Here's a pic of a young cottonmouth at my SIL's house. You can really see the copper shade on the snake. She let it live.
