Some of yall know that we do a lot of bluegrass and old time pickin here on my front porch. I don't really think the music board is appropriate for this post simply because most of the folks there just don't have the same things in common that we all have here. But anyway, James Alan Shelton, lead guitarist for Ralph Stanley and The Clinch Mountain Boys passed away yesterday at the age of 53. I have known, picked with, and been good friends with James for 35 years. Pancreatic cancer is usually very fast and James was no exception. Five weeks ago, he was the picture of health. We have lost another legend. Thanks for allowing me to say a few words about my friend.

Sorry to hear that man. I would love to come sit on your porch and listen to that bluegrass. That's my cup of tea

I'm sorry for the loss of your friend. It's never easy, but it sounds like you have good times to remember and music that he can continue to live through.

And, this was the right board.

Yes it does. My wife who is only 38 just returned from MD Anderson with a clean bill of health. She was diagnosed with a tumor on her tongue in December. She had 2 surgeries to cut off 1/3 of her tongue and the lymph nodes in her neck. She then underwent 6 weeks of intense radiation to the mouth, neck, and throat. She went 2 months without eating and had to be fed thru a PICC line, which was removed today. Now the healing can begin. Sorry for the hijack.

Sorry to hear about your friend. Sounds like you have 35 years of great memories. Best of luck to you and all his family and friends.

Yes, sir. There are years of great memories! For those that are interested, here is a video of James Alan and two of our other pickin friends at a local benefit performance. James had stepped out of his usual role as lead guitarist for Ralph Stanley to help out with the benefit. The man could pick that Martin...

Hoping for your wife's full recovery, RB. Mama BFIV just lost her mother to cancer two months ago. Such a horrible, cruel disease. One day there will be a cure...

Good friends are hard to come by and harder to keep around as we get older.
Sorry for your loss.
