OB, Where the Gardens At This Summer?
Posted by CadesCove on 8/4/14 at 4:05 pm00
I have been out of town working most of the summer, and didn't even get a chance to put mine in. Who's had luck this year? I haven't seen much talk about them from the OB, and that seems strange.
Also, the version of Home Grown Tomatoes, by Ray Wylie Hubbard might be one of the finest country songs ever made. It popped up on my music today & that's what prompted me to start this thread.
ETA: Feel free to post a pic of your garden in here as well. And make sure to include a foot so we can gauge the size of the produce.

my garden did really well... had a very big one. Corn didnt do nothing. Peas did "then deer ate them when they were ready" lol
snap beans, cucumber, peppers "hundreds", squash, maters, all did well

I ended up with a big arse garden. My estimated totals are below. My pop has the running tally on his calendar on his refrigerator.
~2000 lbs tomatoes (~150 plants or so)
~600 ears of Merrit sweet corn
~500 Jubilee watermelons
~400 Charleston Gray watermelons
I'm not listing all the cucumbers, bellpeppers, eggplants, squash, zucchinis, etc. That's too much to try and tally. I have the totals of the maters, melons, and corn at the camp. I'll check on it next time I go.

OK, OK. RWH's version. Is that better?
Also, that's strong work on the garden. Have you sold, donated, put up, or some combination of the three tons of tomatoes?

My house had a garden when I bought it. I ran it over with the mower and fixed that problem

Think he is hoping you make him a BLT.
Tomatos did well, Cherokee purple and Creoles. A couple of cherry heirlooms did well. The rest did not do well. Purple hull peas, Dixie cream peas and speckled butter beans did well. Still picking butter beans. Squash did ok early, cucumbers early as well.
Other than a few pepper plants and the butter beans I've ripped most out.
